Our Founder's Heart

Grace and Summertime Greetings Family!

While penning this message, a familiar melody began to strum the words across my mind to the jazz rendition of Summertime as performed by the incomparable Ms. Ella Fitzgerald in 1968.  I couldn’t help but think to myself… ‘Yes, it’s summer time, but the living is far from easy!’  You see, over the past four months I’ve been intentional about adopting the attitude to Wait, and Watch, God Work.  From my perspective it is open door season; and that which God has allowed to creep upon the face of the earth is not just a physical manifestation of His sovereign power and control, but also a divine opportunity for us to see and accept Jesus Christ, our Savior, for who He truly is.  No one is immune or untouchable.  Anything can happen, to anyone, at any time.  With protests, picket lines and politics swirling alongside sickness, sadness and safety concerns, we see a world forever stained—forever changed.

Last week, while gazing out of my kitchen window I witnessed how something ordinary could reveal something extraordinary.  Suddenly, dark and angry clouds began moving methodically across the sky.  The wind chimed in and began howling as if nature itself was groaning in great pain.  The trees responded and retaliated by violently shaking their limbs in every direction to withstand the blustery breeze.  Finally, the build-up of torrential rain sent an outburst through the air to wash away the old and water all things new.  At that very moment I turned to my husband and said, “Funny how the sky and everything in it seems to be in a fist fight; it’s a good representation of the chaos happening among mankind.”  Leotis grinned and agreed; then just like that, the momentary madness was over.  The sun smiled, chased away the rain, and the wind peacefully stood still.

I believe there’s a spiritual presence in our midst that must not be ignored.  As many families endure hurt, harm, hardship and even hunger, there’s a greater force behind the scenes that is waiting to bring hope and help to those who are dying to live.  It’s a lifeline of LOVE that many will never grasp.  Yet, it is the balm that cures and calms the vicious storms of our existence and helps humanity heal from inside out.  Sure, we’ve come a long way since the summer of 1968, but even in 2020 we can’t merely lean to our own understanding.  And though every mortal has a constitutional right to choose his course—as for me I AM fully persuaded to Wait, and Watch, God Work!

As always… lovingly and graciously yours,

Carolyn A. Watson
Pearl of the Quarter

Though her rearing as a military child caused the family to move from place to place, Marhonda describes her upbringing as positive and normal.  “I grew up in the church; every Wednesday I was in Bible Study and every Sunday I was at Sunday School.”  After her Dad retired from proudly serving our country, they remained in Georgia where Marhonda would enter adulthood, later marry, and raise her two daughters: one (age 16) the basketball player and singer; and the other (age 10) the gymnast and artistic spirit.  As a caring mother and wife her world took a turn for the worse and life, as she knew it, would never be the same.

Marhonda shared her wrenching story about the circumstances that led her to H.O.M.E.  On November 30, 2019, her daughter disclosed that she had been sexually molested by a family member on several occasions.  As a result, Marhonda penned this heartfelt message in her own words… “My heart stopped and so did my world.  I felt like I failed as a mother because I didn’t protect my baby from harm.  I wondered how we were going to make it.  For a few weeks I cried and cried and just kept asking why did this happen to my child and how could I have not noticed.”  As Marhonda described details of this ordeal she remained strong and courageous.  She wants every mother to know how easy it can be to miss the telltale signs of child abuse and explained that we should not overlook our child’s body language, facial expressions or any unusual behavior.

This undue stress caused Marhonda and her husband to part ways.  She was living out of a hotel and barely able to make ends meet.  With the help of a local organization Marhonda was accepted into a program called ‘Hire for Hope’ that made it possible for her and her daughters to move out of the hotel and into a better environment.  On February 7, 2020, she received keys to her new home and was eager to apply for furniture assistance.  “I forgot to pray, I forgot to stand on faith and I forgot to feed my faith so my doubt would starve.  When I started praying, God started blessing me and my girls.”  Well said from a mother who has been through so much.  “Through all of this I learned that God can fix anything.  Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”  Yes, through it all, Marhonda and her daughters are headed in a new direction and H.O.M.E. is so proud to be a special part of their journey to success!
