We are excited to announce Phase 2 of the West Hub! Just last week, the four Regional Big Data Innovation Hubs convened for a kick-off meeting at the National Science Foundation, and we're looking forward to sharing more news and specific opportunities with you through our mailing list, website, and social media.
PHASE 2 Each of the four hubs will receive $4 million over four years, for a total investment of $16 million. This is double the budget for the first round of Big Data Hubs awards made in 2015. Be sure to catch up on the latest with these summary articles and links.
The next four years will include an emphasis on developing and enabling translational data science. As a new service to the community, each Big Data Hub will maintain a seed fund for translational data science as part of its project budget; our West Hub requests for collaborative seed projects will serve to gather compelling, timely, and actionable community ideas throughout the year.
Wondering what happened to our lively annual All Hands Meeting? Embarking on the next phase of growth and national coordination, the Hubs will are working with NSF and partners to host an All Hubs All Hands community data science meeting, open to the public, as a signature event in 2020. Stay tuned for a Call for Host Locations!
SURVEY SAYS... As we begin this next phase, your enthusiasm, creative contributions, and thoughtful inputs will continue to shape our trajectory. We invite you to spend 10-15 minutes on this rapid stakeholder survey, and to share any updates with us at upcoming activities, or via email.
LIVESTREAM, TODAY! Finally, in case you're not on the open-to-all California Water Data Challenge mailing list, TODAY happens to be our annual Summit & Awards Ceremony — if you're not in Sacramento, we invite you to join the conversation on slack, social media, and catch the LIVESTREAM today 11am-4pm PT.
The Summit will feature a fireside chat with Data Reporter Pamela Ren Larson (Arizona Republic, USA TODAY) and UC Berekeley Director of Emergency Management Alicia Johnson, 17+ lightning previews and announcements, reflections from our State government partners, and a special video message from NSF Director France Córdova!
As always, we greatly appreciate your help spreading the word to increase participation across each West Region state (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming). To help us grow our community, please forward this note widely and tell your colleagues to join our mailing list!
On behalf of the West Hub leadership team and our growing network of collaborators, thank you for your continued interest, support, and enthusiasm. Hope to see you or hear from you soon!
