Staying Active When Learning from Home

Staying active when learning from home opener image

When studying online we often end up sitting in front of our desks and computers for hours on end. To avoid getting sucked into that trap, it’s important to remember to take breaks and move around.

Healthy Study Snacks

Almonds
Almonds are a healthy and satisfying snack that contains proteins and healthy fats. Buy unsalted almonds and season them yourself to reduce your sugar and salt intake. If you aren’t an almond fan, other unsalted nuts and seeds are a good choice as well.
Air-popped Popcorn
Air-popped popcorn popped on your own stovetop is a great snack alternative to chips and buttery store-bought popcorn. An added benefit to air-popping your corn is that you can top it however you wish: with salt, or with sugar and cinnamon if you have a sweet tooth.

How has your experience been with the tutoring center?

When I had academic difficulties as an international student, the tutoring center was very helpful to overcome those problems. When I felt frustrated and was uncertain about the assignments, tutors were always with me, which I am super grateful for.

Do you have any tips for students on how to balance the workload now that everything is online?

I would say to try to keep a regular school regimen and mindset, even though you are at home. Try to wake up an hour before your class and get ready instead of joining your class from your bed. And try to keep a productive mindset just like you would during regular school. If you like to dedicate a day to do your homework for the week, then do it. It is very easy to fall asleep five times a day and procrastinate when we are at home, but if you keep a proactive mindset things will go smoothly.

You’re one of the tutors helping students with Blackboard and Remote Learning Support during the start of the semester. Do you have tips for working with the Blackboard platform and for staying organized digitally?

I think scheduling is critical for online learning. It’s very easy to forget about assignments during virtual classes. Thus it’s important to make notes and make a schedule planning when you want to work on which assignment. The more specific the schedule, the easier it is to manage your time. I personally feel that Blackboard is quite organized with the contents under each subsection of your class. Blackboard even sends you a notification when your assignment is due. I think it’s important to constantly keep checking Blackboard to keep yourself updated with the content and the due dates.
