Forest Park News

From Principal Lisa Newlyn

Dear Parents and Families,

I want to give a sincere Congratulations on the New Year
恭贺新禧 We look forward to celebrating the Lunar New Year during our February Spirit Assembly next week.  FPE is so fortunate to work with Ying Zhang, our Confucius Institute teacher.  She and Dr. Bob have arranged for wonderful musical performance by the Confucius Institute/PSU Teachers, as well as a performance by Yishen, and Jing Lu.  This is another great example of our connection with the Confucius Institute through PSU, and the Sister City Association of Portland and Suzhou.   新年快乐 Happy New Year!

Did you know this week is National School Counselor Week?  That's right, 2/4 - 2/8 is a week of celebration and recognition of the work our school counselor's do in our schools.  Please join me in giving a big shout of recognition to our Fabulous Fox, Miss Lizzie!!!  Miss Lizzie supports students, parents and teachers by ensuring social and emotional needs are intact so that kiddos feel safe at school and ready to learn everyday.  And she just poured 430 cups of not so hot cocoa and apple cider to the FPE student body Friday afternoon.  Thank you, Miss Lizzie!

s that time - have you gotten your tix to this year's FPE Auction?  We're five weeks away from a night in Monte Carlo themed fun and fundraising at the downtown Hilton, March 9th, 2019.

From classroom art to vacation packages, teacher experiences and parent parties, there's lot to bid on to ensure stable programming at Forest Park Elementary.  To learn more about how the Friends of Forest Park Elementary support our vision and mission in education, you can find more on the FOFPE webpage.

There's much more going on in the land of Forest Park.  Read on below for all the latest from our community.

Lisa Newlyn,

From Our School Counselor

February 1, 2019

Hello Forest Park Parents and Families,

I have just a few notes and resources for you this week, but of course feel free to reach out with any questions!

  • We are excited to welcome back Dr. Allan Cordova from The Children’s Program on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 6pm-8pm, to continue his conversation with families about parenting anxious children and executive functioning. We received such positive feedback from the families that attended his presentation last year and we can’t wait to learn even more. We hope to see you there!

  • Next Week (Feb. 4-8) is National School Counselor and I hope to share more about the school counseling profession and my role here at Forest Park throughout that week. Check out PPS District News “Counselors can serve as a trusted adult for students” about Christy Wheeler, School Counselor at Sellwood MS, who recently won the Oregon Counselor of the Year Award from the Oregon School Counselor Association (OSCA)!

  • Elementary/Middle/Focus Option Lottery - Here is information about the 2019-2020 Lottery and Transfer Information which runs from February 8th - March 8th.

  • Developing Our Children’s Skills 2019 Parenting Class Series 6 week class for families experiencing challenging behaviors with children who have special healthcare needs, including autism spectrum disorders. Classes begin February 12 (Eastside) or February 13 (Westside).  View informational flyer here.

  • Digital Citizenship Education resources Common Sense Media

  • I recently attended A Day of Love & Logic Conference for educators and parents and I can’t recommend their conferences and books enough. They provide great techniques for dealing with defiant and strong willed kids, underachieving students, sibling rivalry, etc. Click the link for more info!

Have a great weekend!
Lizzie O'Leary, School Counselor

Climate Team:

Meets monthly for one hour with Principal and Climate TOSA to review implementation of Tiered Fidelity Inventory including the support of discipline management, and Student Intervention Team.

Equity Team:

Personal Electronic Device Use at FPE

At FPE, we seek to partner with parents to limit students' recreational screen time. Our philosophy is that personal electronic device use is entertaining and even educational.  As partners in teaching safe and appropriate use, we have guidelines we actively enforce. During class time, Ready to Learn guidelines determine their use, which is only academic. Our school guidelines follow district policy and can be found at this website:  FPE is not responsible for the loss, theft or damage to students’ personal electronic device/s.

Have questions?  Contact Principal Newlyn
