Wow, what a start!

With over 70 new members signed up at Sippy Downs and over 15 new members at Fraser Coast, O'week was definitely a success for USC Eco! The first few weeks of the semester have been really busy, kicking back into study mode for most of us, keeping up with ongoing activities and starting exciting new projects. Keep reading to find out what's happening this semester.

Vote at the USC Eco AGM

All active members are invited to our Annual General Meeting next Wednesday 5 April at 12 PM (Wk 6) at the Student Guild. This is where we elect nominated members to form the USC Eco Board of Directors, so make sure you're there to have a say in who will lead the club this year. Any active member can nominate to be a co-director by emailing this form to us by Sunday 2 April, 5 PM. More details and electronic voting available on our website for members who cannot make it to the meeting (voting opens 5:30 PM, 2 April and closes 12 PM, 5 April). Lunch will be provided on the day.

Free tickets for members to 'A Plastic Ocean'

We're supporting Sea Shepherd Australia by attending the Maroochydore premiere of A Plastic Ocean on Wednesday 3 May at 6 PM (Wk 9). Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time", the documentary shows the crisis facing our ocean from our disposable lifestyle. We'll get together for a bite to eat, a few drinks and great music at Solbar's open mic afterwards. What's even cooler about it is that we have some spare movie tickets to give away! Contact us if you want one for yourself, but hurry: first in, first served!

Training with Fossil Free USC

Divestment training for Fossil Free USC and UQ is happening in Brisbane next Sunday 9 April from 9 AM to 5 PM (all meals included). Tickets are available here for $12 (contact us if you need financial assistance) and include the cost of training and meals. Carpool/train details will be organised closer to the date. Remember to sign our petition for the University to divest too and check out what happened when we contacted the VC about it...

News and project updates

Expressions of interest for waste management video

We are calling for expressions of interest from USC Eco members and the extended university family, in regards to an upcoming project with a Waste Management focus. The project involves the creation of multiple short informative documentaries on the waste management process on the USC campus. The first of these will focus on use of the university's 3 bin system, as this seems to be an ongoing source of torment for both students and faculty. We are looking for collaborators to help with multiple aspects of the project including; script/story design, extras for filming and general hands to help with project logistics. If you are keen to help in any way, please get in touch through the USC Eco Facebook page or contact Rye at

Sign our carpooling petition

We've passed census date, so numbers on campus have gone down... but finding a car park at peak hour is still a headache. And aside from that, we face a much bigger issue: almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions in South East Queensland comes from road transport. If you think that sharing a ride to USC is an easy, free of charge step we can all take right now to do our bit for the planet (and our stress levels in the morning), show your support and sign our petition

Fauna awareness flyer deliveries

Thanks heaps to Rye, Elsie and Alise for delivering flyers to residents in the Varsity and south-east sections of Sippy Downs, and to Lachlan for help with cutting hundreds of flyers. Please let us know if you can help deliver in any of the remaining 7 sections (when the wet weather passes). You can also download and print your own flyers for distribution in your own neighbourhood, school or workplace.
