Since 2015 the De Pere Police Department has operated a drug drop-off location where citizens can bring unused, expired or unwanted medications and leave them in an anonymous but secured environment. In 2017, we collected a record 278 pounds of such medications. Since inception we have collected a total of 711 pounds of medications. Consider the weight of a pill and you can then imagine the volume of medications we have taken in.
As a reminder, the collected medications are routed either to the WI Department of Justice or the Drug Enforcement Agency for proper disposal through a qualified and licensed incinerator facility in Indianapolis, IN. We currently dispose of the medications twice per year from our secure evidence holding area.
Further, we should be mindful of the potential hazards and dangers of medications that are accessible to others, especially to younger persons. The Drug Drop Box, donated by CVS Pharmacies, helps us remove these medications from the mainstream and helps De Pere become a safer community.
