Matariki Devonport

Matariki is the name of the star cluster Pleiades that rises in the night sky during mid-winter. The word Matariki means the ‘eyes of God’ – mata ariki, and the emergence of the stars heralds, in Māori tradition, the start of the new year.

Matariki is a wonderful time to bring whānau together, remember those who have passed, celebrate life ahead, share kai, aroha and the spirit of community. This issue of the Devonport Messenger is your guide to celebrating Matariki in our special place.
