Department of Medicine MATTERS
What a year it's been
In the past several weeks I've had the immense pleasure of celebrating the talent we have right here in the Department of Medicine. I've witnessed the excitement of our medical students as they crossed the stage at Convocation. At the Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony
I marvelled at the 160+ residents and fellows in attendance, who are now prepared to advance the practice of medicine
in their particular fields. On June 9th, more than 150 faculty members, trainees, and special guests came together for the Department of Medicine's
Annual Day, in recognition of their colleagues and this incredible community.
You'd think I'd be tired, running from event to event, but instead I feel energized, excited and encouraged by who we are, and what we do...and
we've done a lot over the 2016-2017 academic year!

Life is a journey, not a destination
Department of Medicine Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony
"You have the power in your hands to shape the future of medicine, to reduce human error and improve diagnostic accuracy, to
completely transform medicine from the practice that we currently know
. Hopefully for the better, perhaps some of the human empathetic touch will be lost...See the opportunity in this challenge."
Faculty of Medicine Graduation Ceremony
Honorary Degree Recipient, Andre Picard, explains in his Convocation speech,
"The best medicine you can provide your patients is a listening ear. The best treatment you can offer them is a compassionate heart."
Transitions and Thank Yous
Combined, they've been division directors in the Department of Medicine for a total of 44 years
. Tony Lang, Gary Lewis, Kathy Pritchard and Neil Shear will be stepping down from their DDD posts. We thank you for the leadership.
Who we are and what we do
On May 31st, 2017 the Departments of Paediatrics and Medicine
celebrated the accomplishments of resident teams who completed projects to improve quality of care
at the CoLearningQI 2017 event.
Response to the Naylor Report
It is our impression by speaking to our broad constituency in the Department of Medicine research community that there is
general consensus that the Naylor Report is an important step forward.
Last year members of the Department of Medicine received
more than 150 awards (not including career awards.)
Here is June's listing.
Canada Research Chair Holders
Drs. Peter Juni, Warren Lee, and Lucy Osborne are the
latest members of the Department of Medicine to hold Canada Research Chairs!
Over this past year we've recruited more than 70 new members
across each of our divisions. Find out who they all are.
