Peer Learning Circle December 2
We're going to wrap up 2016 on a high note with a Peer Learning Circle meeting on Friday, December 2 at the HealthSpark Foundation office in Colmar. Robin Rifkin will lead a discussion with pantry managers, volunteers, and community leaders, and we're looking forward to seeing you all there. Look for details in the coming weeks.
At its inception, MAHN committed itself to getting as much healthy food as possible to food pantries in Montgomery County. A key strategy for getting food to those who need it was expanding Philabundance's Grocers Against Hunger program, which pairs retail grocery stores with local food pantries.

Before MAHN began organizing pantries with Philabundance's, support, Philabundance had distributed 612,983 pounds in the first six months of 2013. Now three years later, Philabundance & Montgomery County pantries distributed 1,043,776 pounds through Grocers Against Hunger in the first six months of this year!

This 70 percent increase speaks to the collaborative efforts of MAHN, Philabundance, our retail partners, and all the pantry managers and volunteers who pick up product at stores using their own vehicles, stock their pantry shelves for their clients, and tirelessly report their distributions back to Philabundance.

Thank you to everyone participating in the Grocers Against Hunger program. We could not have achieved this level of success without your dedication and commitment to serving your communities.

If you have questions, or would like to become a Philabundance member, please contact Lindsey Ricker at
Election Day is Tuesday, November 8! Our efforts to increase awareness of poverty and hunger in Montgomery County will be strengthened if we are active and engaged citizens who advocate for our clients on Election Day, and beyond. Please encourage your friends, neighbors, and pantry clients to go to the polls on Tuesday, November 8. For more information on how and where to vote, visit the Montgomery County Voting Services website.

Additionally, the Hunger-Free Communities Network is asking folks to sign the following letter to your Senators requesting they support the pending Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill. The Network is hoping to get as much support as possible before the end of next week so that they can send them up to the Senate when they return on Nov. 14.

Many Montgomery County pantries have sought more information on volunteer recruitment, training, and support. The Hunger Volunteer Connection serves as a national clearinghouse for organizations combating hunger in the United States through volunteer postings and tools for pantry managers to assess their volunteer capacity. The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board's second annual Freedom From Hunger Food Drive raised more than 3,000 pounds of food for Montgomery County pantries and kitchen, exceeding its goal of 1776 pounds! The drive also helped build awareness through partnerships with area hotels, faith leaders, and attractions like the Elmwood Park Zoo. The Board held the food drive in commemoration of Pope Francis's visit to the Delaware Valley last year, and will continue organizing the drive as a gift to Pope Francis from the entire Montgomery County community.
