Good news in the hunger relief world this month, Pennsylvania decided to get rid of the SNAP asset test! This test increased the administrative burden of SNAP and was a disincentive for SNAP recipients to save money. Congratulations to everyone who helped push this change through!

In addition to the events and coalition meetings this month, we are sharing with you the results of the NPCHF capacity grants for food providers. Congratulations to everyone who received a grant!
This month, we wanted to highlight the grant recipients from North Penn Community Health Foundation’s capacity building grants for food providers. Here is a brief description of the awarded projects:

Catholic Social Services Montgomery County received $10,000 dollars to support the food pantry's transition to a choice model.

Chelten Baptist Church: Chelten-Seeds of Hope received $2,500 dollars to fund a training seminar for this and other nearby organizations that work with low-income individuals on the cause and effect of poverty as it applies to food security, and identify how to better support clients in attaining self-sufficiency.

ElderNet of Lower Merion & Narberth received $3,000 dollars to support technology upgrades for its Ada Mutch Community Resource Center and Food Pantry.

Norristown Ministries, Inc.  received $10,000 to develop and conduct a needs assessment survey to better understand their clients' needs.

The Open Link received $6,700 dollars in support of a survey to identify the needs of this agency's food pantry clients.
If you want to witness one of MontCo’s four local coalitions in action, come to the Advocates Against Hunger Fresh Produce Market on Saturday, May 23rd from 10:00am-12:00pm at Montgomery County - Norristown Public Library, at 1001 Powell Street, Norristown, PA. This market gives away fresh produce to over 300 families. AAH organizes the market from 8:00am-10:00am, and they welcome volunteers for part of the morning or for the whole time. The North Penn Community Health Collaborative is hosting a leadership training on Building Financial Fitness in Your Organization. The training will run from 9:00am-11:00am on Tuesday, May 19th at the Community Partners Center for HHS, Walton Room at 2506 N. Broad St. Colmar, PA 18915. Register here.

The PA Food Security Coalition is a group that is working on food policy advocacy in PA. They just had their biannual meeting, and are an open group to anyone working on food issues. Attached is a brochure about their work. InterCounty Food Network (Western + adjacent counties) is meeting from 10:00am-12:00pm on Monday, May 11th. They are having a guest speaker this meeting, Julie McCabe who facilitates the Nutrition Coalition will speak about what the coalition has done so far in North Penn. It will be held at the Open Link at 452 Penn Street Pennsburg, PA 18073. Monica Oswald has taken over as the new facilitator of the IFN, so please contact her at foodcupboard@theopenlink.org

The Nutrition Coalition (North Penn) is meeting at 9:00am on May 21st at the Lamb Foundation, 114 North Main Street North Wales, PA 19454. Contact Julie McCabe for more information at Julie@mannaonmain.org.

Advocates Against Hunger (Norristown) will have their next meeting in late May or early June at the Montgomery County Foundation, Inc, at 6 Sentry Parkway, East, Suite 302. Contact Kary LaFors at AdvocatesAHLaFors@aol.com.

The Eastern coalition had its second meeting at the end of February, and is planning on meeting again in May, contact Pat Druhan at pdruhan@cadcom.org to get updates about upcoming meetings.
