Enrichment Update
September 26, 2014
This week signaled the launch of our enrichment clusters for students in grades 2-5. After completing interest profiles, students were placed into one of four interest groups according to the data we collected: Business, Athletics, Performing Arts, and Science. Students in each cluster have begun meeting with Ms. Presnick. They will meet twice a week to explore their areas of interest and immerse themselves in problem based learning. Ms. Presnick is currently working on ways to share what students are working on. Both Ms. Presnick and Matthew Reif, District Director of Enrichment, will be presenting detailed information about the enrichment program before our next HSA meeting. The enrichment presentation begins at 6:15 p.m. on October 14th and will be held in the Media Center.
Currently we have nearly 30 volunteers who have signed up to be part of the Volunteers in the Classroom program at Murch. There are many possibilities and we can tailor your volunteerism according to your talents, time, and availability. Please contact Mary Eckstein at mary.eckstein@dc.gov for information on how to become a volunteer at Murch or complete the online volunteer form.
This past Tuesday evening (September 23rd), a group representing the Murch community gathered for a community discussion on “The Role of Diversity in Academic and Social Growth”. One of the goals of the evening was to consider the mechanics of community building across differences, including the ways that parents can facilitate greater understanding for their children and their communities.
The discussion was productive and a great first step in discovering how to move forward. One of the action steps that came out of this meeting was to find ways to do a better job at inclusive community building for the entire Murch community. A small group will meet on October 9th to discuss ways to bring this to fruition and ways to include more community members in the action stage of the process.
We will also be holding another evening of discussion and move toward action, and we hope many more community members will attend. Once we set a date, we hope you will mark it on your calendar and be part of this necessary discussion. Realizing that change requires both reflection and action, we welcome all parents to be part of this ongoing initiative and to help develop Murch as a model multicultural school community!
