Cultural Spotlight and Mapping Project

Happy Friday everyone!  It was a pleasure to meet all of our new parents at our annual New Parent Breakfast this morning.  There are so many opportunities to get involved at Murch, either through the school or through the HSA.  Please check the school website (murchschool.org) regularly, along with your child’s class website, to get updated information.

We invite you to visit our main foyer and see our Cultural Spotlight program (featuring a different culture represented at Murch every several weeks) and our Cultural Mapping Project (where students can identify their place of birth and/or their cultural heritage).  Both projects are great visual reminders of how culturally diverse our school community is.  If you’d like to participate in the Cultural Spotlight program by setting up a display, please contact Lauren Reed (world geography teacher).

Check out the Fall After-School Activities Roster which is also going home in Friday Folders today.  Registration forms are on our website.  Sign up early for activities, as spots do fill up.  Thanks to the PWP (Proving What’s Possible) grant given to us by the district as well as HSA funding, we’ll be expanding our offerings this year.  If you have ideas, please contact Mary Eckstein (project manager).

As a reminder, please check your child’s backpack every Friday for Friday Folder information.  There are a few items in the folder that you need to read, sign and return.  Have a great weekend!

Come to the HSA Meeting on Tuesday
The first HSA meeting of the year is Tuesday, September 9, at 7:00pm in the Murch all-purpose room.  HSA meetings are open to all Murch parents.  We encourage you to come and hear the latest from Mr. C. about after school activities, an update from the SIT committee that is tasked with Murch renovation plans, discussion about potential technology purchases, and more!

Movie Night: "The Lego Movie" Sept 19
The Murch annual Movie Night is Friday, September 19 at 7:00 pm. This year’s show is “The Lego Movie.” Join us to watch the movie on the big screen at the soccer field. Bring a blanket and a drink, and we’ll keep the popcorn popping! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Murch Family 5k Run!
Get ready, start training, and have fun! The 5th Annual Murch Family 5K Run will be held Sunday October 19th at 7:45 am SHARP!
The course: Rock Creek Park 5k course. Start and finish at the Carter Baron parking lot/Tennis Center. This is not a timed event.  Strollers and walkers are welcome. We must clear the course by 9:30, when roads are re-opened. More details and registration to come….

Class Updates & Reminders

September Resource Schedule
As a reminder, K-5^th grade resources will begin on Tuesday, September 2^nd.  Click September Resource Schedule K-5 to see your child’s schedule.

K-2^nd grade will have art, music, PE, world geography and media, which will extend common core learning through the use of multimedia.  3^rd-5^th grade will have art, music, PE and world geography.  In addition to resources, every grade level will have a chance to check out books from the library.  Additionally, 3^rd-5^th graders will have scheduled time to use our computer lab to develop keyboarding skills.

News for Pre-K Parents
Calling all Pre-K parents.  Back to school Night for just the pre-K is September 16th from 6:30 to 7:30pm.  There will be babysitting for Murch age children provided by the HSA.  A signup sheet will be available next week in your child's classroom.
