GatewayJFK Shuttle Passes 10K Ride Milestone

Between April 5th and July 15th, 2021 the GatewayJFK Connection provided over 10,000 rides for employees and community members traveling to or from the Springfield Gardens neighborhood to Downtown Jamaica.

The shuttle runs on weekdays from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM and operates using a mobile phone application built by the tech startup Dollaride. Riders can track the real time location of the shuttle on a map, reserve a seat, and digitally pay for their ride by downloading the Dollaride app. As of Mid-July daily ridership has averaged over 300 passengers per day.

This summer, the GatewayJFK Connection was officially launched at a ribbon cutting featuring Community Members, Business Leaders and Elected Officials. At the event Queens Borough President Donovan Richards linked the shuttle to a vital need for transit in the area “Coming out of this pandemic, we're looking for a new normal where we no longer have transportation deserts.”

To promote the new route, GatewayJFK and Dollaride are giving away 60 free rides to people who download the ap from the Google Play or Apple app store, or who sign up at

Rutgers and GatewayJFK to Explore Solutions for JFK Truck Congestion

A new effort between the Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and GatewayJFK aims to quantify the effects of improving cargo truck flow at JFK International Airport, find technologies and identify potential business models to help improve ongoing issues related to congestion that are affecting the airport and air cargo industry.
Research will include exploring the potential for development of a mobile phone application, determining its benefits, and incentives key stakeholders would have to voluntarily use the application. “This tool could potentially help inform truck drivers when and where cargo is available for pickup, manage truck dispatching, and collect important data on how cargo is moving throughout the facility,” said Dr. Kazem Oryani, a professor at Rutgers and Farmingdale State College, who is leading the project.

Wait times have been an ongoing concern for the logistics businesses who operate within and around JFK airport, according to Scott Grimm-Lyon, the Executive Director of GatewayJFK, a business improvement district that includes 600 businesses that operate off airport property. “When we speak to cargo business in our community, congestion is their number one concern,” said Grimm-Lyon “We hope this project can help us tackle a problem that has diminished cargo capacity at JFK and help us find a win-win solution that will add value to the operations of airlines, ground handlers, freight-forwarders, and trucking companies in the area.”
