JFK Cargo Report:
Tonnage down 20% in 1st Quarter of 2020

Reports from the Port Authority show a 20% reduction in air cargo tonnage shipped through JFK during the first quarter of 2020. The decline was mainly caused by the international sector which accounts for over 75 percent of JFK’s total cargo traffic. The most drastic reduction happened in April of 2020 where international tonnage was 49% less than in the previous year.

A June report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), attributed the recent shift in air cargo trends to disrupted supply chains brought about by Covid-19 restrictions, along with rising industrial production costs in China.

IATA reported that global air cargo has declined at approximately the same rate as JFK; with demand in the first quarter of 2020 down over 20% compared with 2019. IATA also noted that with most of the passenger fleet grounded, global air cargo capacity was down 35%.

The IATA report also revealed that the airfreight market improved in May, but stated that “a full recovery will take time”.
