Instruments in God’s hands to expand His kingdom and fulfill His will
in Yugimachi, Tokyo as it is in heaven.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for praying for us! We have so much to share with you about what God is doing in our community.

A foreign exchange 30 minutes away.

We are amazed by God’s creativity in calling Japanese to himself. Last year we registered as hosts for a program similar to “couch surfing” where we provide room and board in exchange for a few hours of work everyday. Initially we thought this would be a great way to get help around the house (last fall one volunteer chopped all of our firewood to use for two years!), but God had even better plans. A few weeks ago we hosted two Japanese girls in their twenties (one of which lives only 30 minutes away) for one night.

  • The first night we were able to share a lot about Jesus over supper

  • The next day we had a previously arranged time of prayer and worship with our friends. The two girls rearranged their schedule to be able to join. At the end of our prayer time they both opened their hearts to us about the challenges they were facing at home.

  • The next week they asked if they could come back again.

  • One of the girls was able to stay for a Bible study the next morning. After reading the first chapter of Mark tears filled her eyes as she shared that she could never believe that anyone would say what God said to Jesus “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased” about her. Because of an abusive family life she developed a very low image of herself. We encouraged her with the Gospel but we know it may take her several times of hearing and experiencing it before she believes it.

  • Trying something new, we sang “The Blessing” by Elevation Worship over her before she left. (This song has become our bedtime song so we have had lots of practice singing it). Again she was moved to tears as she experienced God’s heart towards her.

The Blessing

The Lord bless you

And keep you

Make His face shine upon you

And be gracious to you

The Lord turn His

Face toward you

And give you peace

May His favor be upon you

And a thousand generations

And your family and your children

And their children, and their children

May His presence go before you

And behind you, and beside you

All around you, and within you

He is with you, He is with you

In the morning, in the evening

In your coming, and your going

In your weeping, and rejoicing

He is for you, He is for you

With our new friends.

Procrastination pays off :)

“Who wants to learn about justification by faith?” This isn’t a typical question we pose to our friends but we are in the middle of a discipleship course that involves explaining to someone what justification by faith means. With two days left to do our assignment and no immediate plans to meet with anyone we decided to pose the question to our group of non-Christian friends through a messaging app. The response amazed us.

“My son is interested in Christianity, can my whole family (husband included) come over to learn from you?” replied one friend. This led to a wonderful evening eating taco rice and discussing justification by faith. Both the 10 year old son and husband were deeply engaged. The next day we received another message from the mom saying that they had been reading the Bible that we gave them, they are taking notes and look forward to discussing more with us.

“I want to hear but I can’t this week. Can I come next week?” responded another friend, which was the catalyst for regularly meeting with several moms to discuss Jesus.

Breakfast by the river

Last week our friends bought a camper van. Because, like the majority of Japan, the husband only has one day a week off they can’t go far to camp. So they have decided to spend the next several Saturday nights camping at the river beach a minutes walk from our home. This means we get to join them for breakfast every Sunday. It is a real challenge to find a time in the week to engage the whole family, not just the wives, so we praise God for this unique opportunity.

Bread and fish with Jesus

Several years ago we started a tradition with some of our friends to gather at the river shortly after Easter to contemplate John 21 while eating fish grilled over an open fire and delicious bread. This year because of COVID-19 we were several months delayed but we finally did it. Because of this year’s incredibly long rainy season we found ourselves planning back to back events at the river to maximize our one sunny day. The plan was to play with non-Christian families by the river in the afternoon and then celebrate bread and fish with Jesus for supper. Much to our surprise the non-christian families wanted to join our celebration and another non-christian family that happened to come to the river wanted to join too. Plus we had a last minute attendance from a family from our church. So instead of two families we had 6 families. How were we going two feed four additional families? Can you guess what happened? We started grilling the fish and we never ran out, in fact there were left overs! Did God multiply the fish? Did the Holy Spirit prompt our friends who bought the fish to buy way too much for just two families? I don’t know. What I do know is that God provided and it was such a joy to share our Father’s heart of invitation and abundance - all are welcome at his table.

Bread and fish with Jesus.

Thank you so much for partnering with us, we couldn’t be here, impacting lives, without your support!
