Quarterly 2022 Community Newsletter (April - June)

Dear Church Family:
You may have questions about my upcoming sabbatical. I’m writing today to open a
very deep part of my heart to you, and to share something I’m very excited and
apprehensive about.

There is a thirst in me now, more than any other time in my life, that cannot be
quenched by DOING MORE FOR God. It will only be met by BEING MORE WITH
God… for an extended period of time. While I long to hear from God regarding the
direction of our church body, our impact in the community, and our faithful obedience to whatever vision He has for us, I know it all begins with me just BEING WITH God,
intentionally and intensely. As Natalie Grant sings, “Help me want the Healer more than the healing. Help me want the Savior more than the saving. Help me want the Giver more than the giving. Oh, help me want You, Jesus, more than anything.” I do want Him more, and pray that you are growing in the same desires for each one of you.

While I don’t want to be away from all of you, one of the disciplines we need, and I
need, is this time of intense seeking, asking and listening. The Elders have recognized the importance for my getting away, to just BE, and to focus now so we can all move forward into what He has called us for heavenward. I am excited to experience the recreation work God wants to do in me, even as that may include some pruning so new things can grow… but it’s hard to do surgery if the patient won’t hold still. So I am committed to retreating, listening, learning and leaning, and I’m going to let the Father do the healing, pruning, recreating and holding as I seek to grow deeper in Him and for Him.

Friends, I want to be the kind of leader who helps each of you hear the voice of God
more clearly for yourselves, who helps you learn how to recognize and respond to Holy Spirit, and who models a life of serving and loving others like Jesus. I believe that’s what God called me to. In order to live into my calling, I have to remember those things too. Or learn them for the first time. This sabbatical is intended to give me the space to be still and know God, and then get to know Him more. I don’t want to know more ABOUT God; I want to know HIM. More than I ever have before. And perhaps in ways I’ve never really known at all.

I am not approaching this time lightly, but I know God knows what He plans for me in
this time. As you feel led, this is how you might pray while I’m away:

1. Pray that my time with God will be refreshing and invigorating. Pray for my intensity and rest, my seeking the Father and my recognition of every hint of His presence —the shouts and the whispers — so I miss NOTHING. I yearn for this to be a time where I can spend focused time and effort on going deeper and stronger and weaker… all at the same time. I long to be more of who He created me to be, both within and through me to you.

2. Pray that my family can rest and make great memories together. My aim is that I not only benefit from my sabbatical time, but my family benefits as well. Pray our time together is enjoyable, life-giving, and full of lasting memories.

3. Pray for your staff and Elders, that God would grant them greater wisdom and courage to lead strong. I don’t worry about this one bit; they’re amazing! Pray that God gives them eyes to see new places of opportunity for the whole body of Christ to step up and glorify God. Just as this time will challenge me to go deeper, so it will challenge you all to do the same.

You all are so very loved. It’s a privilege to walk through life with you, and I am thankful for the invitation of God, and all of you, to do so. I look forward, with thanksgiving, to a time of refreshing and my time of return. Thank you for praying for me.

You are loved,
Pastor Joy
Church Family,

I pray that this newsletter finds you and your families healthy, encouraged, and excited about the future!  This year seems to be flying by; can you believe it’s almost May?  I am grateful that even when time seems to be flying by, even when we are busy with life, and even when there are uncertain things around us that our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  He is always consistent, He is always present, and He is always for us.  We can rest assured in that truth!

We have several events coming up in student ministries that we’d like to get on your radar.  First, on Wednesday, May 4th, we will be having a fundraiser meal for students attending IYC.  The meal will include hamburgers/hotdogs, sides, dessert, and drinks.  Donations will be accepted.  We will be honoring our graduates on senior Sunday, May 15th.  On Sunday, May 22nd, at 6pm, we will have a youth destination unknown.  In June we are working to create a connection point for students (more to come soon!).  Lastly, students will be leaving for International Youth Convention on Wednesday, June 29th and will return on July 5.

We also wanted to let you know that we are planning our “Countdown to Summer Celebration” on Wednesday, May 25th.  You won’t want to miss out on this time for the whole family!  We will have some exciting activities for all ages!  This will also be our last week of regular Wednesday programing until Fall.  A huge thank you to all or our children’s ministry/nursery/youth volunteers who have helped make Wednesday nights happen!  We would especially like to thank Julie Merritt for coordinating Wednesday night kids ministry!

One last thing, be on the look out for upcoming family ministry events and connection points throughout the coming months. We are excited for the things to come and we believe that God has some great things in store for Community Church of God!  More than that-we believe that you and your families are part of that!  I pray God’s richest blessings on each of you, you are loved Church!

Great Blessings,
Pastor Jonathan
Pastor of Student and Family Ministries
I can’t believe we have almost finished another school year as I write this letter. We were very blessed to be able to re-open after covid and we have had a good year with an energetic and precious group of little preschoolers. Early enrollment for next year went well! We still have room for more students. Anyone interested can call the preschool at 618-262-7960.

April is always a busy month as we plan and prepare for our major fundraiser for Wee Kare Preschool. Our annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser was held on Saturday, April 23rd in the church Commons from 7:00-10:30a.m. We also offered drive thru services for those who did not want to come inside. Our little preschoolers did a great job of selling tickets. It was huge success. Thank you to all of you who supported us! We appreciate you.

Our last day of school will be May 24th. We will be closing at 12:30 p.m. on this day so that we can get our school cleaned and closed up for the summer.

Sadly, this is my final newsletter as I am retiring on May 31st. Words cannot express how thankful I am to have worked at such a wonderful place for almost 20 years with the most fabulous people. The friendships and memories I have made through the years are so precious to me. I have loved each and every child who has walked these halls and Wee Kare Preschool will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Elders Board and the pastors through the years who continued to believe in me and supported me throughout my ministry. It is going to be a hard day when I close that door and I walk out of my office for the
last time, but maybe even harder in the fall when Preschool starts back up without me!

Please join me in praying for our preschool ministry, the school board, the elder’s board and Pastor Joy as they transition with a new leader. Our school board spends countless hours meeting together to make sure decisions are made and things are running smoothly. They will be on a mission very soon to find my replacement and get busy preparing for fall! Thank you
again for this wonderful adventure; I am truly blessed.

Gratefully Yours,
Cynthia Mobley

Mission of the Month

One of the reasons we are so passionate and hopeful about our Faith Promise campaign each year is because we believe strongly in the work that local ministries and our global missionaries are doing to impact the Kingdom of God. We also have a desire to help you stay connected with the stories of impact and transformation that are a result of those works. While we may not be “on the ground” where some of those things are happening, our investment, financially and prayerfully, is still a part of the larger Kingdom story God is writing.

For this reason, each month we will feature a ministry or missionary family making a
difference in the world around us. We’ll share not only a story or two about what God is doing through them, but how you can get involved as well. From time to time as we’re able, we’ll also hear personally from the missionaries and ministry leaders themselves.

Our mission of the month for April is The Lunch Wagon. What began as a dream in the heart of some local Allendale residents has now become an incredible vehicle for serving those dealing with food poverty in Wabash County. The Lunch Wagon provides lunches to students in Wabash County throughout the summer, and they park at four stops in Mt. Carmel in addition to four other locations where a driver takes meals to drop off in nearby towns. Community Church of God will serve the Wagon this summer the week of July 5-8, and you can let a pastor or elder know you’re interested in serving.  Beyond food and monetary donations, the Lunch Wagon currently needs volunteers to drive the truck to locations outside Wabash County on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. They are also in need of a cook who could serve M-F from 8:00-10:15a. If you are willing or interested, please call Melissa Smith @ (618) 240-4299 with any questions.

The mission of the month for May is Hope Pregnancy and Resource Center. They are a non-profit organization serving men and women who come seeking help in making decisions about their pregnancies and related concerns. They offer free services like pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, education classes and counseling. Community Church participates in their Baby Bottle Fundraiser every year from Mother’s to Father’s Day. In addition, we make an annual donation to the ministry, and regularly attend the annual fundraising banquet in the fall. If you want to know more about volunteering, contact Vickie Winter at (618) 262-2636.

Our mission of the month for June is Safe Haven. The ministry is a Christian based temporary emergency shelter for homeless women and children in the greater Wabash County, including Wabash, Edwards, Lawrence, Wayne and White Counties in Illinois and Gibson County in Indiana. The staff at Safe Haven makes it a top priority to treat all who receive help with dignity and respect. The shelter offers spiritual, physical, and emotional support alongside a safe place to reside. The goal is to help mothers transition to self-efficiency. Interested in being a volunteer, but not sure what it implies?  Call today and the director can walk you through everything you need to know! Call (618) 262-2677.
