Back to School - with Pirates!

In my September 14 "Yo-ho-ho" class at The Last Word you'll learn why rum and pirates & sailors go hand-in-hand. But as we taste a variety of rums and the cocktails that can be made with them, you'll also find out that there's a lot more to rum than frou-frou tropical drinks. Come explore the serious side of rum (and a tiki drink or two).

More Fall Classes

September 28 - Classic Cocktail/Modern Twist - Know someone who's new to classic cocktails? While there's a lot for Tammy's Tastings regulars in this class, this is an especially good one for newer craft cocktail explorers. We'll make & taste four classic cocktails and a modern twist on each.
October 12 - The Big Easy - New Orleans and craft cocktail history go hand in hand. I'll share stories from my recent trip as we explore the past, present and future of drinking in the Big Easy.
October 26 - Spooky Sips - No gimmicky drinks with dry ice or fake eyeballs, this class will feature a variety of real craft cocktails with seasonally appropriate names. Come in costume and win prizes!

November 9 - Along the Bourbon Trail - Learn all about America's distinctive spirit, and how it shaped and was shaped by the history of our nation. You'll taste a variety of bourbons on their own and in cocktails.

Featured Cocktail - Bloody Mary

I had so much fun researching my brunch drinks class! Brunch and cocktails have been united from the very beginning, and even interwined with important social movements like women's lib. But it was this fascinating and in-depth history of Bloody Mary that really got me excited, so that's the recipe I'm offering up for this issue. And if you'd like to venture out, try subsituting the vodka for gin (we call that a Red Snapper), tequila (Bloody Maria) or rum (Cubanita). The gin and vodka versions were our favorite, although I think mezcal would be a wonderful experiment to try.

Bloody Mary
2 oz vodka
4 oz tomato juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
8 drops Tabasco
4 dash Worcestershire
2 grinds black pepper
1 pinch celery salt
Garnish: celery stick, or whatever craziness you like
Combine ingredients in shaker with ice. Roll to mix. Strain into ice-filled highball glass. Garnish.
