Lowry's 25th Silver Anniversary is Nearly Here

It's only just over a week until the big celebration--Lowry's 25th anniversary! Join us on October 4 and 5 in commemorating the closing of Lowry Air Force Base and celebrating 25 years of the Lowry community. Meet your neighbors on Friday, October 4, for a special happy hour at Lowry Beer Garden from 3-6 pm. Enjoy a drink and a chat with Lowry residents, as well as veterans who were stationed here at the base.

On Saturday, October 5, take the kids to Wings Over the Rockies for a family fun day from 10-2 pm. At regular admission price, you'll get all the airplanes you want, plus some extra fun activities. Librarians from the Schlessman Family Branch will be there doing storytimes and making buttons from 10 am until noon. A brand new exhibit opens that day, too: Mission Aerospace is an interactive maze about flight and the future of NASA. And catch a historic Lowry tour, leaving from the Museum between 10:30 and 1:00.

The Museum closes early on Saturday afternoon to prepare for the big event that night: the Silver Anniversary Gala. From 5:30 to 10:00, enjoy small bites from local purveyors like Officers Club and North County, drinks from local providers and a Signature 25th Cocktail (cash bar), and some fantastic musical entertainment. The Beverly Belles, Frank Sinatra impersonator Derek Evilsizor, and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra will open things up. After a recognition ceremony, Chris Daniels and the Kings will keep you dancing for the rest of the night. It's only $35 ($25 for veterans) for all this fun, plus a photo booth, special access cockpit tours, and exclusive Lowry mementos including a Challenge Coin. Wear your best festive attire for this first of its kind party!

The Gala and other events are hosted and sponsored by the Lowry Foundation, Lowry Community Master Association, and Wings Over the Rockies, and all proceeds from the gala benefit the Lowry Foundation. This money goes directly back into the Lowry neighborhood throughout the year. It funds community programs like the Lowry Speaker Series and the Food for Kids Backpack Program. The Lowry Foundation maintains artistic and cultural features like the Eisenhower Chapel and all the public art throughout our parks and neighborhood, and it funds the Community Grant Program, which enables other Lowry organizations to aid and support our community. Neighborhood Watch Action and Awareness Training

On October 3, join Lowry's Community Resource Denver Police Officer Mike Borquez for a Neighborhood Watch training session. From 6:00-7:00 pm at the Eisenhower Chapel, Officer Borquez will lead a program to help neighbors understand how they can contribute to a lower crime rate. Overall crime in District 3 is down 4%, which DPD attributes to community members and Neighborhood Watch programs. Learn how you can improve the safety of our area and get to know more of your neighbors. And don't forget the importance of Pups On Patrol--dog walkers also play a huge role in community safety! Mark your calendar now for this excellent community resource.

Silver Ropes Volunteer Corps Cleanup Project

Earlier this month, the Silver Ropes Volunteer Corps teamed up with Lowry residents and Lowry Elementary School families to clean up the front landscaping at the school. Together, the volunteers removed dead leaves and plants, weeded, planted 80 new plants, laid down fresh mulch donated by the Colorado Boulevard Home Depot, and hauled away many bins of waste. The 250 foot long stretch at the front of the school now looks much fresher! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to the event. Silver Ropes provided well over half of the volunteers for this project! If you'd like to get involved with Silver Ropes, visit the Lowry Foundation's Volunteer page.

Mrs. Warren's Profession at John Hand Theatre
Germinal Stage presents Mrs. Warren's Profession, a George Bernard Shaw play from 1902. Young Vivie Warren, emancipated, intelligent, and self-sufficient, is astounded to learn her mother rose from poverty to riches through prostitution, and also that she is now part owner and operator of a chain of brothels. Mrs. Warren ably justifies her past, attacking a hypocritical society that rewards vice and oppresses virtue. Vivie, respecting her mother's courage, accepts her past but not her present. Laura Cuetara directs; the play runs from October 11 to November 9. Click here for more information.

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum is pleased to offer Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag included in the price of museum admission. See the 24-minute film daily on the half-hour beginning at 10:30 AM. Red Flag is the international training exercise for air forces of allied countries where the world’s best pilots meet for the most challenging flights of their careers. Follow fighter pilot John Stratton as he soars over the deserts of Nevada in an F-15 Eagle and experiences this extraordinary event.
