Surrey unveils Public Safety Strategy

Mayor Linda Hepner says the City of Surrey's new Public Safety Strategy is "comprehensive, collaborative and measurable." The strategy, unveiled at city hall Monday, takes "direct action" on not only reducing crime but also emergency response, disaster preparedness, transportation safety and persistent social issues such as substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness, Hepner said.

The strategy showcases the 'Newton Safety Unit' and its collaborative work as an integrated team here in the Newton Town Centre.

Surrey RCMP stats indicate 13 percent drop in violent crime

The Surrey RCMP recorded 4,807 violent crimes so far this year compared to 5,518 in the same period last year, a decrease in attempted murders from 24 to 18, the same number of homicides —eight — and a 38 per cent decrease in robberies (313 from 503).

Of property crimes, business break-ins dropped 21 per cent (742 from 938)…

Studio 73 creates unique pieces of fused glass art from jewelry, ornaments, decorative pieces, and functional glassware. These unique pieces they describe as functional art are all made within the studio located right here in Newton. Studio 73 is social enterprise supported by the Community Living Society. The studio employs adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries who are looking to express their creativity while providing them with employment. This great organization allows for employees to grow relationships, develop socially, and build self confidence. Studio 73 is the perfect spot to stop for a gift, and you always have to keep up with the continuous new pieces that are created in studio. Spooktacular Newton gets Surrey into Halloween spirit!

Spooktacular Newton took place Saturday, October 22nd and was a large success! The event featured 1000 free pumpkins, a petting zoo, haunted train, spook theatre, photo booth, trick-or-treating, and more! The event took place along 137th street and had a great turnout. We would like send a big thank you to our title sponsor, Envision Financial for their great support of the event and the community! And a thank you to Real Canadian Superstore for their candy sponsorship. And thank you to all of our partners! We look forward to the event next year!

Get outside and enjoy the weather during our Community Walk! The walk will begin and end at McDonald’s located on 72 Ave (9am-11am), join in on the fun while cleaning up your local neighborhood. 
Bulbs for Beauty Community Planting

The Newton BIA supported the City of Surrey's 'Bulbs for Beauty' initiative at Unwin Park on October 21. Look out for beautiful tulips in the spring!
