Drop in crime, increase in ‘vibrancy’ celebrated by Newton BIA

The Newton Business Improvement Association’s fourth annual general meeting last week centred around “optimism we have for the future” said director Philip Aguirre.

Held at Newton’s Hollywood 3 Cinema on Feb. 22, Aguirre said it was an opportunity for the area’s businesses to “reflect on where we’ve come.”

While the area has seen tragedy at the local hockey arena, a spike in gang violence and has not been immune to the growing opioid epidemic, “we have also grown as a community,” Aguirre told the Now-Leader.

In Dave We Trust

Most ideas start with a conversation and that’s what Newton Talks is all about.

In February, Councilor Dave Woods provided an update on the City of Surrey’s progress in the area. Upgrades to Newton Athletic, the importance of Light Rapid Transit, community engagement on the Canada 150 mural and the Community Center renovations. For March, we will be joined by MP Sukh Dhaliwal.

Newton Talks is a monthly networking forum for Businesses and Community to establish a voice for Newton that improves business opportunities, revitalize the area, and creates a sustainable future for the community. Hosted the second Thursday of each month, the discussion will focus on a different area of concern.

Open to the Community. Lunch is provided.

Criminals come in all shapes and sizes but we often overlook those who prefer to hide behind technology or target those closest to them to ply their craft.

March is Fraud Prevention Month and the Surrey RCMP would like to draw attention to a selection of scams that officers have seen this past year and how to avoid becoming a victim.

#PinkShirtDay 2018

February 28 marked the 10th annual #PinkShirtDay with Lou Jack taking some time out of his busy schedule to spend the morning in the Newton Town Centre taking pictures!

Part of what #PinkShirtDay strives to do is to make sure that anyone who feels affected by bullying knows that they have somewhere to turn—that they are absolutely not alone. Kids can call, text, or chat at whenever and however they want to talk. Whatever it takes to get the help they need.

With painted rocks, Newton artist spreads ‘From Surrey with love’ message

“Writing just seems easier then talking most times,” Katheren Szabo relates as she fills me in on her latest neighborhood-improvement project. Szabo, along with some friends at Newton Recreation Centre, have been painting and decorating rocks. This latest rock-painting project is destined for the Downtown Eastside community in Vancouver, in addition to Newton, where painted rocks and sticks have been left in various spots in the community for discovery.

This rock project, called “From Surrey with Love,” is a Friends of the Grove initiative headed up by Szabo. “We are a small group of Newton neighbours who support free, family-friendly activities here in Newton,” she notes.
