Some Fourth Quarter C4 Program Highlights:

Into the Composter: 400 lbs of Food Scraps a Week

Daily composting at the Intermediate School and High School has filled one Earth Tub in the past six weeks.  That's three cubic yards of nutrient rich compost.  Temperatures in the tub have ranged from 70 degrees to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on microbe activity.  To date 500 students have visited the Compost Center to learn about decomposition and the nutrient cycle and smell that good dirt!  'Yuck,' 'gross,' and 'cool' they said as they dropped their banana peels directly in the composter.

Energy Certification for Local Contractors

Five local contractors received scholarships from C4 to become certified energy efficiency experts.  In addition to some great skills, the certification will allow the contractors to offer additional energy efficiency rebates through XCEL Energy.  Also, thanks to a new insulation machine for our tool library (thank you Freeport McMoRan), energy efficiency improvements like insulation and air sealing have become easier and more affordable.  Our website has updates on certified contractors and available rebates.

Find Winter Overwhelming? There's a New Rebate Pool Available

C4 has a new parternship with Energy Outreach Colorado to offer energy efficiency improvements for income-qualified families in Lake County.  The program begins January 1st and will improve 20 homes this year, offering up to $3,000 in retrofit funding per home.  The program is meant to help those most in need, who might otherwise not be able to make these improvement on their own.  Apply now.
After receiving an audit from
Cloud City Conservation Center, Cheri hired Mill Creek Carpentry to
increase the insulation levels in her attic, seal major air gaps, and
create a warm, dry crawlspace. “I’m so happy with all the
improvements and wouldn’t have thought of doing these without the
energy audit. I had originally thought of doing windows but these
improvements will actually be better and cost less,” she said.
