Palapa Learning Center!
The Palapa Library has entered
the Age of Aquarius!

We have purchased ResourceMate software, an ideal program for small library cataloging, searching, circulating and reporting. This computer scanning system will allow the staff to track a book's journey through our inventory. This is obviously an advanced yet bittersweet alternative to hand stamping, shelf searching, etc. whose old-world charm will be missed.

The Palapa Society has over 6000 books and more donated each day. We will bar code every book, a daunting and time-consuming task for our library staff, but completing the task by Moving Day this fall is certainly attainable. Our DVD inventory continues to grow, and again with patience and understanding, they too will be coded.

A huge shout out to James Black whose computer skills saved the day. He selflessly gave of his time and expertise. Also, thank you to Maryann Douglas and Kathy Cate whose research and committment to the project are immensely appreciated.  Without these devoted library volunteers, this  project would have been a nightmare.

This fall, the library hours will revert to 10-1pm Monday-Saturday. The joy of escaping through books and movies is a lasting one. The Palapa Library staff is honored and privileged to offer this experience to our community.
Palapa Student Wins Contest

Proyecto Pupila held a photography contest giving youth an opportunity to earn a scholarship. One of our Palapa students, Frida Costa, won that scholarship with a 1st place finish. Photography is her passion. She picked up a camera at the age of 14 and was hooked on photography and film.

We congratulate Frida on her well-deserved accomplishment.
Todos Santos Open Studio Tour Announced!

The 8th annual Todos Santos Open Studio Tour will be held on the weekend of Feb 11 & 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All proceeds will go to the children’s art programs at The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C. Ticket sales begin Jan 28th, at $200 pesos each and can be purchased in town at Tecolote Book Store or Cafélix, both located on Calle Juarez.

With map and list in hand, the choices of what to see are practically endless: paint, mixed media, encaustic, wood carving, metal sculpture, stone work, jewelry, fibers and more. The hardest part might be deciding which studios to choose from and if it is possible to get to them all in 2 days. From the south end of town all the way through the north end of El Otro Lado, there are artist studios tucked away that hold treasures undreamed of.

Construction Update

The future home of the Palapa Learning Center is starting to show some real signs of progress. Over the past few weeks AF Design and Construction has undertaken the task of demolishing the building, pouring the foundation base for the walls, clearing the debris, and starting the installation of EF Block walls.

The EF Block will provide insulation and energy efficiency for our buildings. This means we will be cooler on warm days and only need the use fans thereby using less electricity. Our overall goal is to make our buildings sustainable and decrease our carbon footprint.

Palapa Summer Camp 2016

This year´s Summer Camp and Water Safety programs were a huge success! The Summer Camp teamed up with Todos Santos Eco Adventures to teach the Palapa Society students more about local estuaries and more about why Todos Santos is so special. The field trips were led by Diego Bautista, a former Palapa Society Beca student who is now a guide for Todos Santos Eco Adventures.

The kids also had a theatre workshop with
Teatro Luna Azul
where they learned theatre and improv games.

The Water Safety program was led by Mario Becerril and his team of instructors from
Mario Surf School. The kids had a two-week workshop in the Club Oasis pool, then graduated to swimming at Punta Lobos and ended the program with surf lessons at Playa Los Cerritos.

This program would not be possible without its dedicated group of volunteers: Jacki Gillespie, Joy O’Brien, Serena Saltzman, Stephanie Rousso, and Margareite Timmermans. We would like to thank Mrs. Josefina Cota for allowing us to use her pool.  Summer Program DirectorJayna Schweitzer can´t wait to start planning next year´s program to make it even better!

This year, the kids of the Palapa Summer Program had a lot of fun with all the different activities. They took two field trips to nearby nature trails, had swimming and surfing lessons, participated in a theater workshop, made ice cream, sang songs, made crafts... and played. A lot!

Beca Success Story
Diego Bautista

Diego Bautista is a former Palapa Student of the Bridge to English Program and also, former beneficiary of the Beca Program. Upon graduation, he landed a job as a Naturalist Guide for Todos Santos Eco Adventures here in his hometown of Todos Santos, BCS, MX.

This summer, Diego led our current Palapa students on an trip to Las Palmas Beach. It was such a pleasure having him as our guide. He was knowledgeable, well-spoken, and gave us an educational tour of the ecosystems in this location.
It was a great satisfaction to see one of our former students teaching and connecting with our current students.

Stay tuned for future editions of our newsletter to hear his story...

The Palapa Society:
Funds Summer Special Education Courses
One of the students taking this course is Marius Pop, a child with Asperger’s who has been receiving assistance from The Palapa Society for socialization therapy in La Paz, but recently had become unable to go. His mother is very happy that this program is providing Marius with the same opportunity here in Todos Santos. But mostly, she’s thrilled Marius has grown so much in his ability to socialize with his peers in such a short period of time.

Lic. Maria Antonieta Peralta Delgado, Rosa Esthela Romos Garcia, and Leslie Gemally Castro Ramos are working with 33 students to support their language or communication needs. The first classes began on July 18th at Casa de Cultura and will continue until August 11, 2016.

As an educational organization, we feel this is an important area of need and qualifies for our financial assistance.  The Palapa Society of Todos Santos A.C. is pleased to announce funding to a special education program helping at-risk youth with communication and language skills. The students receiving this educational course are mostly from the Meliton Albanez and Miguel Hidalgo elementary schools in Todos Santos. These funds are from our Chino program and assist students with the cost of medications. The total amount we donated was $40,800 MXP.

Your continued support of The Palapa Society makes all these and many other efforts possible. Thank you!

¡Gracias!
Saying Farewell and Good Wishes
A Fond Farewell: Donna Viglione

In late July, The Palapa Society wished Donna and Marc Viglione a fond farewell. For over 10 years Donna has dedicated herself to helping found, develop, and evolve our organization. She was involved in every facet of programs related to the educational needs of youth in Todos Santos.

Beginning in 2005 she developed and grew The Puente Program in order to teach English to local children during their summer vacation. In 2006 this program was officially renamed "Puente Hacia el Ingles,” (Bridge to English Class) and the summer classes were expanded to an after-school format.

Throughout the years there hasn't been much she wasn't involved with and took a major role in many projects including the Historic Homes Tour, the Todos Santos Music Festival, Tiangius, and 5K Run as well as serving as Vice President for Outreach and ICF Liaison.  Donna also served as President of The Palapa Society in 2008-09.

In 2011 Donna Viglione and Mario Surf School teamed up to start the three-week Water Safety Program. They knew there was a need to not only teach the kids of Todos Santos how to swim but also teach them safety techniques in and out of the water.

Please join us in wishing Donna and Marc well in their new endeavors. They will always hold a special place in our hearts for their selfless giving and dedication to the community.
