Homemade Lavender Calendula Salve

Why Calendula? Calendula, is technically known as Calendula Officinalis.’Calendula’ is from the Latin ‘kalendae’, the given name from the Romans, used to indicate how it bloomed year round in their area; and ‘officinalis’ meaning it is included in official lists as a medicinal herb. Another more common name for Calendula is Pot Marigold; and it has some pretty amazing healing properties. This powerful, yet pretty ‘flower’ is from the Asteraceae family; other family members include Yarrow, Arnica and Chamomile which are all powerhouse herbs! Calendula is both a culinary and medicinal herb. The petals are completely edible and are great on a fresh green salad! I tend to use dried Calendula for medicinal uses, primarily for its anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also great in tinctures, poultices, in teas…it really is wonderfully diverse plant. Read More.

Food’s Many Gray Areas

Even though I “officially” cleaned the pork and other unclean foods out of my kitchen in 2007, it was quite some time before I realized how much “broth of abominable things” was still being served in our home.

I didn’t realize that pork and other unclean animals were used as ingredients all throughout our food supply. The day I learned some of this, I was truly overwhelmed! I felt I would never be able to shop at a grocery store or eat at a restaurant again. However, after I calmed down, I realized that I could learn how to use only clean ingredients – and that my food would usually taste better, cost less, and be healthier for it.  Read more.

Moms, Love Your Children

Every mom loves their children, right? We look at their adorable angelic faces as they sleep and are filled with warm fuzzy thoughts. Since we all love our children, why does this verse say that we need to be taught to love our children? Quite frankly, because sometimes we don’t want to love our children.

You just got a bit upset at that last statement, didn’t you? How could anyone say I don’t want to love my children? Love is not a warm fuzzy feeling. Love is choosing to put the other person’s best interests before my own. Love is getting up at 3 am to feed a baby when I’m so tired I can hardly move. Love is listening to my child kindly when I feel like my head is going to explode. Love is recognizing that a whiny child needs a hug, not a lecture. I don’t always feel like doing those things. I don’t always want to show love to my children. It is something I must learn to do. It is something I have to choose to do. Read More.
