I can’t think of any issue that is more important than working to see that no schoolchild in this world goes hungry.
~Drew Barrymore

The first day of winter is December 21st but it is already really cold outside. The holidays are approaching fast and the numbers of families using the Foothills Food Bank are up. December is an important month for the food bank as they try to get the word out about their community shopping day and raise funds for the Children's Winter Pantry. The school gardens are bedded down for the winter but the action towards growth and support is still going strong. Read on for events and opportunities happening this month.

The Foothills Food Bank has been hard at work gathering donations in the form of funds and food for the upcoming winter break.

Over 900 Mount Baker School District students use the free and reduced meals program. Some of these children depend on these meals and when they are out of school they miss out on two healthy meals a day.

The children's Winter/Spring Pantry program delivers healthy child friendly food to students' homes for them and their family. This program makes a major difference in keeping hunger at bay during school breaks.

You can give cash donations or donate some of these items:
  • Instant Oatmeal
  • Low Sugar Cereals
  • Cup of Noodles
  • Applesauce cups or pouches
  • Mac n Cheese cups
  • Graham Crackers
  • Granola Bars
If you are interested in donating you can do it through FFB  Website or Facebook page, drop food off at Tuesday distributions, or use one of the listed collection bins in the sidebar.

Food Education and School Garden Action Plan

The Food Education and School Garden Initiative group was formed out of the Foothills Food Summit. The group consists of a partnership between the  Mount Baker School District and other community stakeholders. Their focus is in supporting many school related healthy food access efforts such as school gardens, school meals, the Winter & Spring pantry program, food education, and more. Their 2016/2017 action plan is now complete and is available here . It will soon be available on the Foothills Food Bank website under the Foothills Community Food Partnership tab.
