August Food Access Update

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” ~ J.R.R.Tolkien

Food can be a powerful tool for bringing community members closer together. Food is one thing that we all have in common. We may not prepare or eat the same foods but we all eat and we all love to talk about what we eat. Nothing brings people closer together than sharing good food.

The main harvest season is in full swing at all of the wonderful farms in Whatcom county. Check out the opportunities in the East Whatcom community coming up this month to grow, harvest, purchase, share, and ultimately eat food with others.

URGENT NEED!
The Acme School Garden is expanding ... and they need your help. This Saturday (8/20) the school garden project at Acme will be receiving 7 yards of soil and they need volunteers to build new beds. If interested just show up at the school at 10:00 am. If enough people show up it is expected to take roughly 2 hours.

If you can't make this one Kendall, Acme, and Harmony elementary school gardens are always in need of community volunteers. Some of the opportunities are: outreach, teaching, growing, work parties, harvesting, watering, and more.
Local Food Works! Is an organization that runs many food related programs that benefit the community. Currently Local Food Works needs a couple of volunteers to help with two very important programs that benefit the Foothills Food Bank.
  • Grow-A-Row: Encourages home gardeners and farmers to dedicate a row of crops in their gardens or fields that will be dedicated to the Foothills Food Bank.
  • Share-The-Bounty: Offers to pick up excess produce that homeowners or farmers have grown and deliver it to the Foothills food bank.
If you are interested in helping or leading either or both of these programs or if you know someone that would please contact Margie using the button below.

Volunteer for Local Food Works!
The Foothills Food Bank is currently looking for a temporary volunteer to pick up extra produce from the Bellingham Food Bank and bring it to the Foothills Food Bank on Tuesday Mornings.
This position will last through the growing season to about mid October.

The Foothills Food Bank has continuous need for food and cash donations to buy food. Here are a few summer hunger facts:
  • Many people think about hunger around the holidays, but hunger is a year-round problem. For this reason, food donations tend to be lower in the summer months
  • Contrary to what many people may think, the highest demand for food is in the summer.
  • A family with two children must provide more than 200 extra meals during summer vacation when their children do not have access to school meals—that’s an extremely difficult situation to face for most low-income families
Please consider planning your food drives in the summer if possible or donate cash and food individually now. You can bring your donations to the food bank on Tuesday mornings just before distribution time at St. Peters at around 8am.

Meet Lydia Mcclaran

Lydia, a graduate of Mt Baker HS and WWU, has been volunteering at the Foothills Food Bank for 2 months. She found the food bank to be one of the easiest organizations to volunteer with. She thinks that the volunteers are amazing hard working people and enjoys spending time with them.

Her favorite things about volunteering at the food bank are being able to see the diversity in her community and being able to socialize with patrons and other volunteers.
