Reflections about Parking and Traffic around the School Campus

We have noticed that traffic problems at the end of the school day are not functioning well, in large part due to a lack of collaboration of some drivers who park their vehicles in non-parking areas, which obstruct the normal operation of the school’s transportation services. The Parent Delegates have shared with the school this same concern, so we wish to ask the collaboration of all the school community, as well as additional measures ASV may consider to improve this situation.

First, we kindly request that parents coming to school at 16:30 do not park their vehicles in:

  • the drop-off zone
  • sidewalks with yellow lines

  • sidewalks with vehicles parked on the opposite side.

  • double row

  • any other area affecting the normal circulation of buses or cars.

It is important that drivers respect traffic signs and parking rules.  Otherwise, we may have serious problems affecting the entire school community. Let’s think together about possible consequences such as:

  • Any type of emergency representing a hazard for students, staff or parents. Just one vehicle parked on the sidewalk might block the evacuation or the access of ambulance, fire services or the police.

  • The use of a non-parking area just for a short time. If finally a driver stays a long time talking with other parents or waiting while their children play in the school parks, other drivers may not find parking, or they may be late to other personal appointments.

  • School buses not leaving the school at the scheduled time, arriving late to their stops, which is a problem for parents or relatives waiting for students there.

  • Incontinence on young children when the trip is longer than usual because the bus departed late.

  • Surpass the maximum time allowed for students on the school bus, according to official regulations. The school might be fined for this issue.

For all these reasons and more, we kindly request the collaboration, responsibility and empathy towards other members of the school community.

In addition to this, remember that the ASV Maintenance Team is always supervising the arrival and departure of the school buses, coordinating these operations and making all the effort to avoid the situations mentioned above.  We kindly request that if  these staff members inform a driver about parking proceedings or access to the ASV parking slot, please follow their directions and treat them with the respect and understanding that everyone deserves.

ASV will continue to look for solutions which may be implemented directly or may be decreed by the City Council of Puçol, as we are in contact with this agency. We would also like to inform you that the ASV Operations Team will attend the next meeting of parent delegates to share with them the latest news on difficulties encountered and possible solutions for this problem.

We appreciate your understanding and collaboration on any current and future decision the school is adopting to improve this part of our daily operations.

PBIS Parent Workshop with Dr. George Sugai

On Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 19:00-20:30, Dr. George Sugai will conduct a parent workshop about the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Program.  PBIS was an initiative ASV began in 2015-1016 in Preschool and Elementary and which was well-received by parents and staff.  Consequently, ASV has initiated the school wide implementation of PBIS in High School as well.

PBIS is a framework to provide for a proactive approach to school wide behavior and expectations.  It focuses on creating and sustaining a positive environment for achieving important social and learning outcomes, while helping to prevent behavioral issues. PBIS is used in approximately 7,000 schools worldwide.

Currently, 13 ASV staff members serve on the PBIS Implementation Team, and they are working with the most accomplished expert in the field, Dr. George Sugai from the University of Connecticut

All ASV parents are welcome to attend this exceptionally informative workshop, and ASV is privileged to have an opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Sugai.

After the performance, students and other Elementary teachers and assistants showed their appreciation to Ms. Chelo Roig, as this teacher is taking a partial retirement as of March 2017 after 35 years of faithfully serving ASV, including serving as one of the first teachers of ASV at its founding in 1980.  Ms. Chelo is leaving her position as a homeroom teacher, but she will continue at ASV as Reading Support Teacher. Students and parents will miss her care and love.
