ASV is one of the Best Schools Doing Marketing and Communications
American School of Valencia participated in the final event of National Award for Educational Marketing, a competition recognizing innovation, creativity and perseverance of schools using marketing and communication. Within a total of 250 participating schools and 50 final candidates, ASV was highlighted as one of the three best schools in Spain working on marketing and communications in Spain. Thank you to all of the school community who is always supporting this part of our activities!

First Week of exchange in Naples
This week ASV students arrived and settled in nicely with CSN Community School of Naples families. The students have had such enriching experiences already including attending classes, visiting local sites, and being immersed in the lifestyle of American families. Fostering Literacy Teaching with Monica Medina
Staff reveled in the professional development they received this week from Monica Medina. Ms. Medina has been trained in the Teacher´s College Reader´s and Writer´s workshop, which was the primary focus of her training as ASV this week. She meet with classroom teachers of students from 2nd through 6th grade to continue training in the use of writing data to plan individualized and small group instruction.

Ms. Medina also met with the Spanish department to e xpand the workshop approach to instruction, and she met with the preschool to share strategies for English Language Acquisition. Monica will be back in March to continue this training, and she plans to include a session for parents at that time also. Ask your young writer what he or she is writing about in writer´s workshop!

Preschool Activities
Friday morning was a bit chilly and rainy but Preschool teachers have many resources to ensure children enjoy a great time inside the classrooms. PK1, PK2 and Kinder met at 10 for a their weekly assembly. After reading the list of children included in the Golden Book for their engagement and outstanding behaviour, they sang two songs to wish a nice day everyone.

Theatre Play: Adventures in the Jungle
All classes from PK1 to Kinder will enjoy a theater play with the company La Tourné Teatro on Monday, January 23, 2017, at 10:00 and 11:00. Each performance will be adapted to each age to make it more enjoyable.

Planning Fallas at ASV
The Spanish department in liaison with the art teacher, Ms. Jackie Paarhuis, are planning the celebration of Fallas on March 13, 2017. Ms. Jackie is already designing a falla which celebrates that this festival is now part of the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The monument will have the title “A Season of Festivals”, and will be splitted into four areas, one for each season of the year (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), where there will depictions of festivals from around the world. A giant fallera will be on top of the central part. In a few days we will invite all of the ASV community to contribute with cardboard, paper, and other materials to our fallas workshop.

"¿Qué es un Rey para tí? ASV Works Ready to Go
The Social Studies teacher, Ms. Asunción Barrachina, received yesterday all of the works for the school competition "What does being a King mean to you?". This activity invites students in 6th grade to explain in a creative way the role of King Felipe VI and the institution of the Spanish monarchy.

Eventuality with 3th Grade Field Trip
3th grade classes planned a visit to the underground river Cuevas de San José in Vall d'Uxó, Castellón, on Wednesday, January 25. The activity might be affected by the recent rains, which can increase the level of the river. In case the place was not visitable, the field trip will be rescheduled.

Being Safe Online. Talk for 5th Grade
Both 5th grade classes will receive soon an informational talk on risk using Internet, social media, and technology. Members of the technology group of the Civil Guard are visiting ASV on Wednesday, January 25, from 14:45 to 16:15 h.

Information for all Grade 12 Parents (Class of 2017)
We would like to inform officially you that any Senior Trip (Grade 12), Senior Party and/or Senior Prom are privately planned, privately funded and are not organized with the cooperation or support of the American School of Valencia in any manner. ASV has no involvement in these events, and the school does not permit any organization of these events to take place at the school nor provide any form of supervision.
Therefore, we encourage all parents to have an open and forthright discussion with your child about his/her involvement in these non-ASV activities. As parents, you accept responsibility and must make the decision about whether or not your child will participate in these non-ASV events.

Summer Camps in the US. Review the presentation
Parents interested in finding summer programs and summer camps in the United States can review the recent presentation given by Ms. Katherine Matles, from Education USA, at the ASV. It's very important to start the application process NOW because many competitive programs get filled very quickly.

Meeting TBS (Toulouse Business School)
Representatives of Toulouse Business School visited ASV and offered an informative talk on their programs, fees and admission proceedings. Capital of Haute-Garonne, a region near the Pyrenees, Toulouse is a dynamic hub for the aerospace industry in Europe. TBS offers interesting programs including Bachelor in Management, Master in Management, Aerospace MBA, Executive MBA, and Doctorate of Business Administration. Classes are giving in English, French and Spanish and the average annual fee is 7,900 euros. Interested students must have the High School diploma and complete an Admission Test and admission Interview. ASV Alumnus Claire Falter studied at this University.

Unitour
On Thursday, January 26, 2017, the class of Grade 12 will visit Unitour (a Spanish University Fair) at SH Valencia Palace Hotel. Mr Frechina and Ms Veronica will lead this group leaving school at 9.45 and returning at 12.30 h.

Group 4 Project Lab Day
Students taking science courses in 11th Grade changed their normal schedule to work the entire day on the activity Group 4 Project. Eleven teams developed experiments analyzing multiple aspects of foodunder the supervision of the High School Science department.

High School Progress Reports Grade 7-11
We are at the halfway point of the Second Trimester for grades 7-11. This is a good time to check Powerschool to see your child’s progress in each subject.
You may address any related doubts or clarification to the teacher of that subject, the advisor, the department coordinator or directly to the Principal.

Reminder on communication with the School Nurse
We would like to inform you about our procedures on health issues, which are necessary to keep our students safe, as well as some procedures to follow when contacting with the school nurse. The best time to contact Ms. Inma Requena is first thing in the morning, before 10:30, preferably by e-mail. Please follow these instructions regarding medicine administration at school, temporary diet, and symptoms which may require a medical absences.

Learning Days for Languages
ASV+ French and German will have their Learning Day on February. Learning Day is an opportunity for the students to show their parents what they have been learning and gives the students the opportunity to teach their parents. Parents have to come prepared to participate, sing, play and enjoy with your child! the schedule is as follows:

- Wednesday, January 25: ASV+ 2 Grade Soccer at 17:30 will be playing Puzol UD at ASV´s Athletic Field.
- Wednesday, January 25: ASV+ 3-4-5 Grade Soccer at 18:30 will be playing Puzol UD at ASV´s Athletic Field.
