High School Student Interviewed by the UN Communications Service

Anneefleur Bruin, a Grade 10 student, was interviewed today by the United Nations (UN) Communications Office at the ASV school campus. Miss Bruin will be featured in a UN video news report highlighting “Brave Men, Brave Souls”, her song paying tribute to the United Nations peacekeepers, the Blue Helmets.

Miss Bruin composed this song in May 2016 before a performance of the ASV High School music class at the UN Support Base in Valencia on the occasion of the UN International Peacekeeper’s Day. “I had the idea of preparing for the performance, which I shared with our music teacher, Ms. Leah Roblin. Then, I researched UN peace missions, and I decided that the song should reflect their work”, she explained during the interview.

A few months later, she recorded “Brave Men, Brave Souls”, at a local studio, Cut Records, and edited a video with official UN audiovisual resources. The UN communications unit in Southern Europe (based in Brindisi, Italy) found her message and the visual look of the work so interesting that they decided to film this video report about her work, which will be shown soon by the UN Service of Public Information.

ASV on the news: Aula, Levante-EMV

"Aula", the weekly education supplement on Levante-EMV, included on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, a full-page news report on the history of ASV.  The text highlighted the special nature of ASV as the only American school in the Valencian community while describing its multilingual curriculum and the school’s focus on the skills known as “the 5 Cs”: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and character. Readers also can see some pictures of special school events and new facilities such as the High School pilot classroom.

Student Pick Up Procedures for Nursery through Grade 2

We would like to take this opportunity to remind all families about the Nursery through Grade 2 student pick up procedures each school day.  As we recently published in our 2016-2017 Preschool and Elementary Handbooks, the pickup times for Nursery through Grade 2 students are from 16:20-16:30 daily in the designated areas for each class.  Please be advised that there is no complimentary supervision service after 16:30.

Any delays in picking up students after the designated time will incur an assessed fee that will be invoiced monthly.  Please refer to the student handbook for more details.

During September 2016 we will not charge any late student pick up fees, but we wish to provide you with accurate information in advance in order that you can make all necessary adjustments and arrangements to pick up your child in a timely manner and at the stipulated time and place.

Therefore, beginning on Monday, October 3, 2016 and until further notice, the school will rigorously apply our students’ pick up policy and assess any late pick up fees accordingly.  We will then invoice all fees incurred during one month’s period in the monthly invoicing.

Thank you in advance for all of your cooperation and support.

Weekly Bake Sales

Once again, the weekly bake sales will begin on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 and every Tuesday during the school year.  All snacks are one euro and the proceeds will be going to Kapita School in Zambia and  Animals Sagunto SOS.

ASV Tickets are Back!

Why are we using these tickets?
We are continuing our focus on positive behavior and feedback as part of our plan to establish an optimal learning environment.  This is part of our multi-year focus on Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS).

How do we use the tickets and positive reinforcement?
We will recognize students for making good choices in a variety of ways:  students can earn a spot at the Table of Excellence (where they get special treatment at lunch time), students can be recognized at assembly as an ASV Star Student (they receive a certificate on stage and are featured in Voices), students receive individual feedback verbally and through tickets, and also each classroom has incentives that they work together to collectively achieve and celebrate.

What can parents do to help?
If your child brings home an ASV ticket, as him/her how she earned that and celebrate the good choices your child is making!

What are the next steps?
As PBIS is part of our ASV goal work for this year, we will be working with an internationally known trainer to continue to develop our program.  The administrative team met with a potential PBIS trainer this week and we were excited to learn we are advanced in many ways for a school that has been working at this for less than one year!

Assessments Coming up for your Child

In order to effectively address the needs of each child, we will be administering assessments to adjust instruction.  The reading and math computerized MAP tests for Grades 3-5 will be administered  on September 26 and 28, 2016. Please ensure that your child has a good night’s rest and a good breakfast.

An additional reading test is administered one-on-one for students in Grades 1-5 by the teacher (Teachers College Benchmark Assessment).  Those tests will begin on September 19, 2016 and be completed by September 23, 2016.  Parents will be provided with the results of these assessments at parent conferences.

Swimming Lessons in PE

We are excited to be able to offer another session of swimming before the weather turns cold. The session is usually about 30 minutes.  If your child is sensitive to the sun feel free to send a protective shirt or sunscreen.

HS Technology Assemblies

High School students had special assemblies addressed to introduce them the concept of a fair, balanced and secure use of technology at ASV. Students learned that access to technology resources, both with their own devices or the school infrastructure, is a privilege and must be always related to academic and educational purposes.

Mr. Samuel Landete, ASV’s IT Coordinator, prepared an interactive Question and Answer Game throughout the online platform Kahoot and a printed copy of the Technology Use Agreement was provided   to all high school students.  All high school students must read through the Technolgy Use Agreement carefully with their parents and return the signed agreement to the school.

New Lockers for Grades 10 - 12

High School students in Grades 10-12 received new lockers with USB ports and electrical outlets to charge their electronic devices. This is a significant upgrade for these high school students. All other lockers have been cleaned and repaired.
