Happy October 9th!

The Valencian Community celebrates its namesake day on Sunday, October 9, 2016. Valencia and many other cities have special events remembering the entrance of King Jaume I in 1238 to the capital city during the period known as Reconquesta.

These historical facts are studied by our students in 3th, 4th, and 6th grades, sometimes summarizing what they have learned in oral presentations or artwork. In addition to this, on Thursday, October 6, the students in 5th Grade visited Xàtiva, an important city conquered by Jaume I in 1244 and the first European town where paper was produced.

Parent Conferences for Nursery and PreKinder 1

As  is traditional at ASV, teachers in Nursery and PreKinder 1 will be available to meet families with children in these grades and talk about their adaptation after the start of the school year. Parents will be able to book a specific date and time by following one of these links. We recently described the booking proceedings on this post on the school website.

Parent Night for Prekinder 2 and Kinder

Families with children in these grades were invited to attend the Parent Night on Thursday, October 6, 2016. The activity started at these classrooms, where parents received important information about curriculum, daily routines, children development and support at home. Later at the school theater, Principal Dr. Ann Kox and Vice Principal Elena Corchs talked about the lines of effort and the ASV goals for the academic year 2016-2017.

Yesterday Kinder was invited to attend an assembly with Grade 1 and Grade 2. Students reviewed the ASV values, celebrated excellence by receiving the Star Student Diplomas, and had a lot of fun with a special guest, the writer and storyteller Ms. Ree Gillet.

Star Student Recognition

As part of our sustained effort to call attention to the desired behaviors in our students, we are continuing to make adjustments so that students receive natural positive consequences for adhering to our ASV Commitments.  As part of this, we initiated the Star Student recognition at each assembly. These were the students recognized this week during the assembly held with Kinder, Grade 1 and Grade 2:

Leo Bocking Martina López Lucía Bru Marco Fernández
Estela Fernández Alejandro Flores Alba Almenar Daniel Martínez
Alba Gutiérrez Pau Redón Chloe Atienza Sofia Saborit

Students who are recognized will now also receive two passes to be admitted to Visions on their specified day and can make a purchase with their money.  We know this is a privilege that kids enjoy and are happy to extend this opportunity to our Star Students!

This program will be very interactive and offers students the opportunity to use their imagination in the service of a better world for all.  We are excited to have real leadership opportunities for our new leaders!

What´s New in Grade 6?

You may have noticed some changes in Grade 6 this year, which we believe will significantly enhance the learning experiences for all Grade 6 students.  As we explained at the ASV Parents’ Meeting on July 6, 2016, as well as in the 2015-2016 Annual Report, a variety of modifications were implemented for Grade 6 in 2016-2017.

From our cumulative experiences, we found that the transitions from elementary school to high school were a challenging academic, social and emotional adjustment. Consequently, as occurs in the majority of other American and international schools, ASV is piloting a program of incorporating and grouping students together in Grades 6, 7 and 8.  This allows for age-appropriate supports, instruction and creating a wonderful sense of community.  Of course, this grade level grouping does not affect the quality of the academic programs or the years of study in the school.
We would also like to provide you with some additional information about the improvements in Grade 6 this year as follows:
  1. The Grade 6 students will continue to be taught by Mr. MacLarty and Mr. Stapleton, two of the most respected and experienced educators at ASV.  What will be different in 2016-2017 is that they will team teach, which means that the teachers will share teaching responsibilities by subject area and students will have an opportunity to experience changing classes, like in high school, but with less movement.
  2. As part of ASV’s commitment to world language acquisition, French and German are now an integral part of the academic curriculum for all Grade 6 students.
  3. The Grade 6 students are now using the same schedule as high school students. In addition to providing an improved lunch time, they can also participate in ASV+, which aligns with the athletic age groups in Spain.
  4. Grades 6, 7 and 8 are now supported by our Grades 6, 7 and 8 Coordinator, Ms. Isabel Castro. This affords students with specific age-appropriate supports, in addition to the Principal, Vice Principal, Guidance Counselor and Grade Level Advisors.  Ms. Castro monitors the students closely, coordinates their classes and activities, and ensures for a smooth transition to High School. She also communicates directly with families to address any issues or concerns.
  5. MacBook Air laptops were introduced into Grade 6 as part of the ASV’s commitment to integrating technology into all aspects of the curriculum.
  6. Grade 6 students continue to use standards-based grading
To date, the students, parents and staff have been very positive about the improvements, and we will continue to make adjustments and enhancements throughout the academic year. The students are really enjoying the extra freedom, movement and opportunities to grow that these changes have provided. As always, we welcome your feedback.

We will be discussing annual events, such as end of year celebrations with stakeholders this month, including with the StudentCouncil and Parent Delegates.   Any additional information on those events will follow as it becomes available.

Thank you again for all of your support as we begin a great 2016-2017 academic year.

Dr. Kristy L. Beam
High School Principal

How to Participate in the Activity "Jueves del Arte"

ASV offers our High School students the opportunity of participating in the “Jueves del Arte” extracurricular activity under the supervision of Ms. Paula Jover, ASV’s Art History teacher.   This activity is part of the IB CAS program and of the History and Art History subjects.

The students will take the bus route assigned for the activity and respect all bus behavior rules.  Also during the activity their behavior must be exemplary, and afterwards they will return home on their own.

Therefore, we kindly request that you complete this Google Form in order to authorize your son/daughter to take part in this activity.  Please remember you will need to log in through your @parentasvalencia.org account, in order to authenticate your authorization.  Such authorization will be valid throughout the entire 2016-2017 Academic Year.
