ASV Day 2022

American School of Valencia would like to invite students, parents, and faculty-staff members to return to enjoy ASV Day, the annual gathering of the ASV Community, on Saturday, October 15, 2022

ASV Day is a unique opportunity to celebrate the joy of belonging to our school community. This much-awaited event returns after two years (2020 and 2021) of restrictions and it is the first time the entire school community will be able to participate in a large event on campus.

The event will begin at 11:30 and will finish at 17:30 h. Further details on the activities will be shared in upcoming newsletters and through the ASV app. In the meantime, please reserve Saturday, October 15, 2022 in your calendars.

General Announcements

Announcements from the ASV Infirmary

COVID-19 Measures

Schools in Valencia and Spain have been able to begin the 2022-2023 Academic Year without extensive restrictions regarding students’ interactions and group arrangement.  The current COVID-19 measures derive from the general norms and recommendations established by the Spanish government in April 2022 and a document for schools released by the Generalitat Valenciana on September 9, 2022. Essentially, those measures are:
  • Optional mask use in classrooms and common areas
  • Required mask use in all transportation services (mandatory for Grades 1-12 and highly recommended for PK1-Kinder)
  • Ventilation of all learning spaces
  • Recommended indoor physical distancing
  • Encouragement of frequent handwashing
  • Hand sanitizer available at all building entrances
Regarding contagions, as a general rule, a student should not attend school if he or she has COVID-compatible symptoms (temperature of 37.5°C or higher). Please, contact your health center and follow their instructions. Return to school will take place when symptoms disappear, including remaining afebrile in the last 24 hours. The ASV Infirmary also appreciates if contagions of siblings or family members are communicated as close contacts must increase prevention measures and wear masks.

Dental Check for Kinder Students

The Generalitat Valenciana, in partnership with the Puçol Health Center, is offering a Dental Health Program for our students.  This includes a dental check-up for all students in Kinder.
Parents must confirm if they are interested or not in having their Kinder student participate by completing this form.

Infirmary Student Takes an Internship at ASV

ASV has a number of internship agreements with American, international and local universities for university-level students. We are pleased to welcome Ms. Andrea Samos, a third-year Infirmary student at the European University of Valencia.  From September to December, the ASV Infirmary will provide her with a professional environment to learn more about the professional tasks developed in a school. Welcome, Andrea!

Preschool and Elementary School

2022-2023 Student Handbooks Published

All parents should read over the Student Handbook for their child’s section in order that they are familiar with all programs, resources, and expectations for the academic year The documents are always available on the ASV Mobile App (Documents) and the Parent Resources Site (Preschool and Elementary School sections  and embedded document here)

Each family is also required to complete an ASV Technology Acceptable Use Agreement Form to show they have read and understand our expectations around the presence of and use of technology on the  ASV Campus.

If you have any questions, please let Dr. Murphy or Ms. Rubio know so they can provide clarification.

We look forward to a productive, safe and learning-focused year ahead with all our students and families!

(1) Please note that our Handbooks and other general communication (reports, teacher messages, etc.) are provided in English. If you need assistance with the use of Google Translate, or another app to translate the document into your home language, please contact ASVTechnology@asvalencia.org or Google Translate for assistance.

(2) Parents will receive the Technology Acceptable Use Agreement form link via email on Sunday; September 25, 2022. Please remember the information needs to be completed for the normal operation of the school.

MAP Testing in Grades 3-5

Next week we will begin our Spring Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing for all students in Grades  3-5.  Students will take a math test and a reading test on separate days within the next two weeks.  Each test is approximately an hour long, but the actual length varies for each student.

We would like you to know a few important things about this test:
  • Every year this test is administered twice annually to all ASV Grades 3-10 students.
  • Students do not need to prepare for it
  • Students can take all the time they need, and often the longer they take, the better they do (taking time on each question contributes to accuracy!)
  • Students should do their best as this is an important measurement of growth and learning for them and the school that is used to inform our instruction, interventions and programs
The school uses this information in a variety of ways, including to track each students’ growth and make decisions to meet each child’s needs.  How can parents help? The most important thing you can do is to ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep before the test and has a good breakfast before school so they can do their best on the assessment.

Below are the dates and times for each grade level’s test. They will be administered during the first period of the day when children are fresh and able to focus.  You will receive the results of this MAP assessment during ES Parent Conferences in November or with the Semester Report Cards for Middle School and High School students.  For more information, please refer to the parent toolkit which is available online.

PS-ES Parent Delegate Volunteer Sign-ups Open

Each class in each grade level at ASV is offered the opportunity to select a Parent Delegate. The Parent Delegate’s role is to attend monthly meetings with the administration team, communicate information to parents, share concerns of parents (prior to meetings), assist with preparations for special events, and support ASV's mission.

Parents of students in Preschool and Elementary who would like to be considered for a volunteer Parent Delegate position, please complete THIS FORM by Friday, September 30, 2022.

Elementary Library Grand Opening

After unpacking from the moves caused by Covid Bubble Groups last year, the LIbrary Staff are very happy to announce that the Elementary Library, located in the Grade 1-2 Hallway, will be reopening on Monday, September 26, 2022!

All classes again have a designated ‘Library Time’ each week and will receive an orientation from the ES Library Assistant, Ms. Blasco, on how to check out books to take home.

In addition, we are thrilled to offer ‘Open Library Time’ for all students in Grades 1-2 during Morning Park, and all students in Grades 3-5 during Afternoon Park 5 days a week. This will provide another space and opportunity to meet individual student needs at ASV.  Students who need a ‘quiet break’, or who prefer to read, draw or just rest can recharge in the library or check out a new book before returning to classes.

Parents will receive information next week on how to reserve and check out books online for their children from the ASV Library Database.

Class Photo Day

Preschool and Elementary classes had their annual class photo sessions this past week. Students who were absent for their class photo day will have an opportunity to get an individual picture taken to add to the group photos on October 6 and 13, 2022. A notification on the assigned day will be shared through the homeroom teachers newsletters on Seesaw and Google Classroom or via email directly to parents.

Professional Development to Ensure Preparedness for F&P Reading Assessments in Grades 1-5

ASV teachers understand how impactful professional development is if we want to continue to model what it is to be a lifelong learner for our students. This is why the Grades 1-5 Team participated in an F&P Reading Level Moderation Workshop with ASV’s Literacy Coach, Ms. Kornobis. This workshop served as a refresher for teachers right before they began F&P Reading Level assessments with their students, and also provided teachers with the opportunity to work through challenges together.

Teachers will be sharing out the F&P results with their students as they set Reading Growth Goals for the year and support each student in reaching their potential. Parents will see F&P Results on the Fall 2022 Mid-Semester Progress Reports that are sent home for Kinder - Grade 5 on October 28, 2022.

iPad Integration in the Grade 6 Learning Curriculum

As it was previously announced in July 2022 during the Annual Parent Meeting, the school will integrate the use of iPads into the Middle School curriculum.  This project is starting with Grade 6.

Earlier in September, teachers had specific training on how to make the best use of the iPad in the diverse Grade 6 courses. Students will earn the privilege of using a device through a badging program that was presented last Thursday, September 22, 2020, during a special assembly.

Grade 6 Families will receive the iPad Use Agreement on paper.  The device will be returned in June. By continuing the program in September 2023 and September 2024, all Middle School grades will achieve a completely deployed 1:1 program at the beginning of the 2024-2025 Academic Year.

Middle School Field Trips

All of the Middle School classes will be out on community building trips this coming Friday, September 30, 2022.  The activity selected for each group is:
  • Grade 6 - Multi Adventure Sports at the Action Alborache outdoor center
  • Grade 7 - Rafting on the Cabriel river at Tamayo el Tete
  • Grade 8 - Cycling and Kayaking near the Ojos negros Cycling track in Caudiel

A trip at this time of the year will give the students an opportunity to work together outside of the classroom and have some fun at the same time. All trips will take place within a normal school day. The deadline to sign up is Sunday, September 25, 2022.

The trip letters contain the details of the trips and access to the form to sign up. Please remember to sign up using the ASV accounts.
