Hosting ASV+ Day on November 4

On Friday November 4, 2016 we will hold our first Elementary ASV+ Day for 2016-2017, only for the athletic activities: Soccer, Basketball and Field Hockey (Grades 1-5).

On this occasion our student-athletes will have to complete six ability circuits based on what they have been learning during this first two months of training in their sport and also try all the other sports involved in ASV+. We will start the event at 17:30 and the circuits will finish at 18:45. To end the afternoon our 3-4-5 Soccer team, 3-4-5 Basketball team and 3-4-5 Field Hockey team will have an exhibition match from 19:00 to 20:00 (this matches will take place if we have enough players).

We will use our newly updated athletic facilities. For this event Visions Café will be moved to the dining hall inside the new Athletic Center. It will be open from 16:00 to 19:30. Like in Visions all the families will have a chance to have a snack before the event starts and from this new space families will have an incredible view of their student-athlete’s performance while they have a chance to have a coffee and relax.

(From 16:30 to 17:30 the children who stay in school will have to stay under adult supervision as the coaches will be busy preparing the event).

The Spanish Women’s Hockey Coach Visited the new Athletic Center

Adrian Lock, coach of the Spanish Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team, visited the ASV Athletic Center yesterday morning. ASV Director, Michael L. Smith, offered a guided tour to Mr. Lock and two other coaches, who wanted to see the new pitch built in park D. “It has been a great experience to come and see the facilities. I travelled around the world looking for different installations and this is one of the top quality pitches you can get, this is the same quality pitch we played on the Olympic tournament. And the better quality of the facilities, the better quality of the training at the end of the day,”  Mr. Lock said after the visit.

Prior to see Park D, the group had a look on the new Athletic Center, where ASV has multipurpose rooms, restrooms, lockers, and a dining hall offering nice views of the basketball court and the hockey pitch. Visitors highlighted some features such as the quality of the surface, the proximity to the indoor facilities or the dimensions of the technical area. “We normally sit down before each training session, half an hour looking video either games or previous trainings. So the classroom right next to the pitch for us is a good idea. It is directly connected, you don’t have to walk. And these small details make a top quality facility,”  the coach explained.

United Nations Day on October 24th

ASV joined the special events organized on Monday, October 24, 2016,  to celebrate the UN Day at the UN Support Base in Valencia. ASV students had a guided tour around this facility and enjoyed a technology fair featuring innovative devices such as VR glasses.  In addition to learn this informational part, our students highlighted the human touch: “It was very interesting listening to the stories of the people there, and it is something I really appreciate,” 11th grader Eric Martí commented.

Faculty Professional Development

Teachers from Kinder to Eighth Grades have been participating in several faculty workshops led by the distinguished educator Ms. Mónica Medina. Based in California, Ms. Medina is an expert in curriculum design and in the implementation of literacy programs. She also has worked with many international schools offering professional development.

From Wednesday to Friday, Ms. Medina’s workshops were focused on literacy, lesson planning, rubrics and assessment, and the use of book clubs to engage students. Teachers received interesting and innovative ideas, shared their experiences teaching at ASV, and collaborated to apply this new knowledge.

In just three weeks we will be hosting the ASV Model United Nations Conference, VALMUN 2016. MUN Delegates are getting ready for their participation according to committees they have been assigned. Learn more on the conference topics here.

VIS Basketball Championship

ASV hosted a new edition of the Valencia International Schools basketball tournament. Over 300 students and 20 coaches gathered in our Athletic Center for a fun day of competition. According to the ASV Director, Andy Ojelade, “the level each year is stronger, the atmosphere between the teams was great, and many of the players now begin to know each other, it is great that the kids learn to balance the sport with the academics.”
