Update provided by Natalia Mazitova, VP of Education

On February 18, 2017, thirteen student teams from Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina gathered at the Investment Research Challenge | Southern Classic competition to present equity analysis and investment recommendations before judges from the industry.

This year, the subject company of the Investment Research Challenge | Southern Classic was Delta Air Lines, Inc.  We would like to thank Delta’s management for working closely with us; we also would like to thank Delta’s representative Jonathan Glidden, CFA for attending the finals, and for addressing the audience before the winners were announced.

On the morning of the event, all teams presented their analysis to the judges, and the best three teams (Clemson University, Kennesaw State University, and University of Georgia) advanced to the finals in the afternoon.  You can watch the three finalists’ presentations and see additional materials on our website.

Congratulations to Kennesaw State University, the winning team of the 2017 Investment Research Challenge | Southern Classic!  No doubt, the team is already busy preparing for the Americas Regional competition in Seattle, WA (6-7 April 2017). Please support them as they prepare to represent our region in Seattle.

The student teams put in a lot of work during the competition: completing equity analysis, writing their reports, as well as creating presentations and perfecting public speaking skills. It was very exciting to see the next generation of finance experts; the judges and the audience were impressed by the skills and positive attitudes that they are bringing to the profession. The Research Challenge – Southern Classic Committee has compiled a book of resumes of the participants. If you would like a copy, please reach out to education@asfip.org.

The Investment Research Challenge takes a lot of work, not only from the students, but also from the volunteers who organize the event.  The ASFIP Board would like to thank the Research Challenge Committee and all of the judges, graders, and other volunteers who helped to bring the event together. Without them, this competition would not be the success that it has become today. A special thank you goes to Aaron Jacobson-Swanson, CFA and Fred Tulley, CFA, who coordinated the IRC this year.  Finally, we also would like to express our on-going gratitude to the CFA Society of Alabama and the CFA Society of South Carolina for their continued support of the competition.

Looking forward to next year, we will be thrilled to see all the teams that will be participating, and we are hoping that in the 2018 Southern Classic we will see even more new teams.

If you are interested in volunteering for this initiative, or would like to nominate a team from a college that is not currently participating, please contact us at cfa.irc.southernclassic@gmail.com.
