Local action for a low carbon future

E-News | January 2017

Dear Friends & Supporters,

We would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and welcome you to our first newsletter of 2017.

This is an important year for us as February marks our 10th year of operation - a birthday we will be proud to celebrate with you at our upcoming AGM.

Our role within this borough is to support all of it's residents and businesses to reduce their impact on the environment. We do this by offering honest and trusted help and advice to all who ask for it. But, we also do something else. We run various practical projects across the borough which allow residents to get involved and do their bit and we like to think that this helps to inspire people to do things to improve their neighbourhoods which they otherwise might not do.

A note from our CEO...

Last year, for many, felt like a bad year with the uncertainties of Brexit, the massive shift in US politics and the war in Syria reaching new lows.

Environmentally, 2016 was mixed as we started the year celebrating the fantastic outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference, only to see this good work threatened by Brexit and the new US President's climate change scepticism. Nearer home, the Prime Minister's support for Hinkley point, while failing to support renewables at home, was also a set back and you would be forgiven for asking ' What can we do in the face of such indifference?'

The answer is to do what you are already doing in supporting grassroots organizations like Sustainable Merton so that we can continue the work we do for the next ten years. We see climate change not just as a challenge to our way of life but also an opportunity to inspire our communities to respond in a positive and innovative way.

We thank you for your support so far and please look out for all the ways you can support us in the coming year"  -

New Year's Day Community Clean Up
Sustainable Merton were very pleased to support our friends at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association again this year with their wonderful litter pick of Morden town centre on 1st January.

Around 38 young people gave their time to clean up our community and their hard work is a fantastic example of  what can be achieved if we each do our bit to help. We can't think of a more positive way to start the new year!

A big thank you to everyone who took part and we very much looking forward to working with the group a lot more during the coming year.

Grow Wild | Community gardening for health and well being
The Grow Wild team have a few great reasons why we should all spare a little more of our time caring for our local community gardens this year...

🌱 Make the choice to step away from your phone and laptop to spend quality time with friends, family and neighbours, and meet new people.

🌱 Keep your mind active by learning new skills and brushing up on your sowing and growing knowledge. You'll also reap the health benefits of moving more too!

🌱 Volunteering is such a rewarding way to spend your free time. You will feel a real sense of purpose and pride in knowing that you are making a difference.
