All the latest from Sustainable Merton!

Hi <<First Name>>,

We've been 'Out & About' at community fairs, planting days and, of course, the Merton Green Parents Family Fun Day! Other highlights include teaming up with SHINE for their healthy schools summer project and the announcement of the launch of our new Community Champions project!

Coming up... Abundance Wimbledon prepare for their annual Fruit Day and we also look forward to celebrating National Allotments Week (10th-16th August) at both our Phipps Bridge community & herb gardens!

News & Info

Find out what we've been up to and keep up to date with sustainability issues in Merton...

Community Champions: The Launch!

On 11th July, at Merton Council's Love Your Street celebration, Tom Walsh announced the launch of Sustainable Merton’s Community Champions project.

The project is supported by Merton Council, The Institute for Sustainability, Moat Housing and Circle Housing Merton Priory, and aims to establish a team of Community Champions to undertake a range of environmental engagement initiatives throughout the borough. Champions will receive training so that they are able to provide their communities with good quality advice on a range of sustainability issues. Find out more about the role and sign up HERE.
"Becoming a Community Champion is a great opportunity for people who are already interested in caring for their environment to get more involved and encourage others to do their bit to improve their local environment” - Tom Walsh.

Merton Green Parents Fun Day!

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Green Parents Fun Day at Morden Hall Park! Families enjoyed a clothes exchange, crafts and reusable nappy demonstrations. Around 6 large bags of clothes were donated on the day, lots of butterflies were made and organiser Abby tells there was some serious park exploration!

See more of the action HERE!

The SHINE Project

We thoroughly enjoyed working with the SHINE Trust as part of a healthy schools summer project for students in Mitcham.

SHINE is an education charity providing extra support to disadvantaged young people after school, on Saturdays and in the school holidays.

During the week, the children took part in sports, cooking and gardening sessions - including garden exploration and management, composting and wheel barrow racing! They also explored the parts of plants we eat, nutrition for a healthy diet and practised their cooking skills.

Find out more about our week with SHINE...

An Abundance of Fruit!

Abundance Wimbledon collects surplus fruit and makes sure it gets used to make jam, juice, puddings etc. Excess fruit is also distributed to local charities, such as Merton Vision, to provide for the homeless and elderly.

So if there is more fruit in your garden than you are likely to need, please contact abundancewimbledon@gmail.com or call Joyce (020 8946 3750) or Juliet (020 8946 2514). You can borrow a fruit picking pole to reach the top of your tree or ask if a fruit picking team can help.

National Allotments Week (10th - 16th August)

This year's annual celebration aims to emphasise the benefits that allotments bring to everyone, regardless of age or gender, and to highlight the fact that we need to value our remaining plots and preserve them for future generations.

Volunteering at our Phipps Bridge Community Garden is a great way to explore the gardening world and meet new friends. Join us on 12th August at our weekly Wednesday Workday for a taste of allotment life! We're also running a number of planting sessions at the Phipps Bridge Herb Garden too!
A good day for lettuces!
