All the latest from Sustainable Merton!

Hi <<First Name>>,

As Spring came to an end, we joined local residents as they continue to prepare the Mitcham Community Orchard & Gardens for summer. We also took part in the Morden Hall Park BioBlitz and have been working on our plan to create a Food Strategy for Merton.

This month, get ready for 'Recycle Week' (22nd - 28th June) and to take on The Plastic Challenge! More plots are now also available in Merton for you to discover the many benefits of allotment gardening.
Having fun at the BioBlitz!

Mitcham Community Orchard & Gardens

“There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met”
- W.B. Yeats
On a sunny Saturday 16th May, around 50 local residents came together to keep the Mitcham Community Orchard & Gardens project growing strong.

New friendships were formed and the sense of community was noticeably enhanced. The group was honoured by a visit from the Mayor, David Chung, and the day ended with a barbeque and drinks for the deserving workforce.

Morden Hall Park BioBlitz

On 30th May, visitors to Morden Hall Park became wildlife explorers for the park's first ever BioBlitz!
Local experts led guided walks in a race against time to survey all forms of wildlife in the park's wetlands, meadows and many other habitats. All recordings made are significant and will be passed on to local and national databases that monitor our wildlife.

Sustainable Merton were amongst the local groups also on hand to talk to visitors about environmental projects and issues in and around the borough.

The event was a new and exciting way to experience one of Merton’s wonderful green spaces!
The little explorers were keen to take part in our own mini search for compost creatures. See more of the action HERE

Recycle Week: 22nd - 28th June

Organised by WRAP under the 'Recycle Now' brand, Recycle Week is a 'celebration of everything about recycling'.

With this year's theme being 'Recycling Around the Home', Merton Council's Recycling Encouragement Manager, Jane Alexander, shares her top tips for recycling household items HERE.
Upcycling is also a great way to give new life to waste materials... Make flower vases from glass bottles, design your own jewellery or create a collage!

The 'Style Junkies' recycled costume competition and upcoming exhibition (run by Merton Council) is also a great example of how trash can be transformed! Find out more...

Creating a Food Strategy for Merton

We believe that reducing waste by finding a good home for surplus food makes sense. To take this concept further, we are now looking to facilitate bringing together local food donors and potential recipients in Merton.

This is not as simple as it may seem and issues such as storage and staffing must be considered. Our proposed pilot would test how this would work in practice in Merton and expose potential barriers. Sustainable Merton's Fiona tells us MORE...
ecent French legislation to force supermarkets to donate their surplus food to charities has highlighted this issue and Lizzie, a 38 Degrees member, is also calling for a new law to do the same in the UK. If you agree, ** SIGN THE PETITION **

Become an Allotmenteer!

Running an allotment requires time and hard work but this will be rewarded with your own fresh fruit and vegetables, new friends and improved physical and mental well being. A sense of community can really grow and social events, such as the recent planting day at Tamworth Farm, are a great opportunity to get to know your fellow allotmenteers.

Ready to get started? Plots are now available on the Martin Way Allotments and you can also join the short waiting list for a plot on our Rose Avenue site.
Find out more about these opportunities and the many health, social and environmental benefits of local food growing HERE.

The Plastic Challenge!

Single use plastics are used extensively in our everyday lives but are often not recycled where possible. They persist in the environment for many years and are causing significant harm to marine life.

The Marine Conservation Society's 'Plastic Challenge', which takes place throughout June, aims to spread the 'reduce, reuse and recycle' message and encourage us all to buy only what we need.
Find out more about the challenge HERE!
