Cranmer Primary School's New 'Eco-Friendly' Building

On 23rd February, Tom Walsh (CEO, Sustainable Merton) visited Cranmer Primary School, Mitcham, for a first look at their new environmentally friendly building - Cranmer Court.

Head Teacher Ruth Whymark hosted the tour and two pupils proudly helped guide Tom and the other visitors around the site. The striking building (right) includes renewable energy technology and a sedum roof to encourage biodiversity and improve insulation.

Click HERE to find out more about Tom's thoughts on the building's design and the impact this will have on both the school and environment.

Sustainability Checklist for Buildings:
Making It A Better Place to Live

Green Coffee members have created a list of sustainable features for new buildings and this is already being used by local groups taking action for sustainability in the borough.

Sustainable Merton and Wimbledon East Hillside Residents’ Association have submitted this list to the Plough Lane consultation. The aim is to encourage the developer to make the proposed 20,000 seat football stadium (below), retail unit, fitness club and 602 apartments as sustainable as possible.

Green Drinks is Back!

Having taken a prolonged break, we are excited to announce that Green Drinks is returning and is now being hosted by Sustainable Merton's Abby! (Organiser of Merton Green Parents)

We'd like to say a big thank you to her for taking on this role and we hope many of you will come along each month for a drink and chat about all things 'green'!
** The first meet up will be on Wednesday 18th March at 8pm in the Hand and Racquet (Table 5), 25-27 Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon SW19 7NE **

Say No To Fracking In Merton!

Local residents have not forgotten that Merton is among the locations identified as potential fracking sites across the country.

Despite the significant threats to human and environmental health, just a few months ago, London Local Power, a new energy firm run by ‘pro-fracking pundit’ Nick Grealy, applied for licences to frack three blocks of land in London, including Merton. Find out more about the destructive effects of fracking and
(Above: A reminder of the anti-fracking protest staged by Merton Friends of the Earth in 2013)

show your support against the planned proposal by signing the 38 Degrees petition HERE!

The Big Sunflower Project 2015

We are proud to be taking part in The Information Point's 'Big Sunflower Project' to raise awareness for centronuclear and myotubular myopathy.
The project helps to increase awareness of these rare neuromuscular conditions by asking people to grow a sunflower for the 'cheery and positive outlook they convey' and to share photos once they have flowered.

We will be planting 120 seeds with children from six schools across the borough, who will each watch theirs grow and flower to carry a special message.

Taking part is easy, simply email centronuclear.org@btopenworld.com now
to request your FREE seeds and get planting any time between March and June!
