6 Ways to Spot a Superstar CPA Firm for Your Business

by Jennifer Barnes, Co-Founder and CEO, ProBackOffice

If you need help finding a good CPA firm, let us help you. We work very synergistically with CPA’s and have collaborated with some of the best firms in San Diego. Most CPAs can give you the basic support but are they strong enough to take your business to the next level? There are many criteria when searching for your CPA. These are some of the top criteria we use to spot the right CPA firm for our clients:
  • They come highly recommended and with strong references
  • Experience with clients in the same industry and size as your business
  • Pro-active, responsive and thorough
  • Ability to think outside the box and ask great questions
  • They are a GO-TO resource for the company
  • They care about your business

Important Dates To Remember for 2016

1/15/16 - 2015 fourth quarter estimated tax payments due
2/2/16 - W-2s & 1099s are due to your vendors and staff
2/29/16 - 1099s are due to the IRS
3/15/16 - Business tax returns are due
4/15/16 - The individual tax return and extension deadline

For electronic filing, you can visit this web site, www.track1099.com They provide the ability to e-file many forms, including Form 1099-misc.  The cost for a small volume is generally the same as paper forms, for a really small volume this tends to be less expensive, either way, quite efficient to use.

Also, review the following IN ORDER TO DO 1099s:
  • W-9s are on file and signed for contractors/consultants receiving >$600 in non-employee compensation
  • Review vendors in QuickBooks to make sure they’re set up as 1099 vendors
  • Review the expense accounts being charged by those vendors to ensure they are mapped as a 1099 expense account.
Don’t’ wait until the last minute. If you need our help closing the books or doing your 1099s, don’t hesitate to ask.

Year End Checklist

  • Remember to order 1099s and other supplies
  • Ensure you have all vendor 1099 information on file
  • Verify all active employee data
  • Perform any bonus calculations for your staff
  • Verify and review benefit information for your employees
    • Ensure all payroll liability accounts are accurate
    • Review employee wages, sick time and PTO
  • Prepare a 90-day cash flow forecast for Q1
  • Determine the proper accruals to close out 2015
  • Set a date to finalize year-end financials
