Please read the entirety of this important announcement.

Dear UnitedCoR supporters and volunteers,

I am writing to share that the founder and primary funder of the United Coalition of Reason's (UnitedCoR) partnership with the Secular Coalition for America Education Fund (SCAEF), has withdrawn their support for UnitedCoR. As a result, SCAEF no longer has the financial resources necessary to manage UnitedCoR programs.

I am proud to share what SCAEF was able to accomplish:

  • Three local leadership summits in Southern California, South Carolina, and Tennessee, covered by Religion News Service and local media outlets in Southern California
  • Launching the first-ever Secular America Votes campaign, covered by the Wall Street Journal
  • Produced a guide to national affiliation options for local secular groups, highlighting the resources national secular organizations have to offer
  • Established a national Communications Working Group, co-organized with the American Humanist Association
  • Established a national Grassroots Working Group
  • Hosted webinars for local grassroots leaders
  • Organized the 2019 Secular Week of Action in the lead-up to the National Day of Prayer
  • Organized a savvy #MySecularHoliday social media campaign with the Secular Coalition's member organizations to combat the "War on Christmas" narrative
Moving forward, the following programs and resources will continue to be available or will be transitioned to SCAEF:
  • We will continue to further institutionalize cooperation among the SCAEF's 19 member organizations through our working groups, convening communications, grassroots, lobbying and legal staff across the movement to work together
  • The Secular Coalition for America will continue to engage with local groups and supporters to mobilize secular voters and advocate for the separation of church and state
  • SCAEF will connect any leaders interested in organizing a leadership summit with the leaders we worked with to successfully implement summits in 2019
  • The list of local groups provided on the UnitedCoR website will be transitioned to the SCAEF website. Local secular groups and communities will be required to update their profiles annually, or their profile will be removed. This will ensure that all published remains current on the SCAEF website. You can help us get started by completing the form here on behalf of your individual group.
  • SCAEF will continue to work with its member organizations to provide resources to support local secular groups, like our webinar this Thursday, which equips local secular groups incorporated as 501(c)(3) nonprofits to engage, effectively and legally, in the upcoming 2020 elections. Register for the webinar here.
Actions to Take Now:
  1. Complete your local group's profile for the SCAEF website
  2. Sign up for this webinar to equip your group with the tools to effectively—and legally—engage in the 2020 elections!
How will this affect our local Coalitions of Reason?
We encourage your groups to continue pursuing the mission of UnitedCoR locally and regionally by building strong coalitions, whether or not they are branded as "Coalitions of Reason," to strengthen local secular groups in your area and collaborate to make a bigger impact.

However, there will no longer be dedicated staff and resources managing UnitedCoR's programs. Rather, we encourage you to use this affiliation guide to connect with national secular organizations that can provide your group with support as a benefit of affiliation. Additionally, the SCAEF's Grassroots Working Group will continue to work together to find more ways to support local secular communities.

While my role has shifted from a focus on grassroots and community programs to governmental affairs for the Secular Coalition for America, I will continue to serve as a resource to local secular groups seeking to grow, thrive, and build political clout.

Thank you all for your continued activism and support.
