Don's Destination:

Iguazu Falls - on the border between Brazil and Argentina

Located in dense jungle and surrounded by national parks on all sides, Iguazu Falls is one of Earth's most awe-inspiring sights. Iguazu Falls is actually made up of hundreds of waterfalls along a 1.9 mile wide expanse of river that drops precipitously over a basalt cliff right on the border between Brazil and Argentina. The sheer power and noise of the cascades is intense and a total sensory delight. In certain places the earth itself can be felt trembling from the force of the falling water. Photographers who get a chance to experience this place could keep busy finding watery compositions for days. I recommend visiting during our winter months and basing yourself in Puerto Iguazu, Argentina for at least 3-4 days in order to have plenty of time to see all of the area's sights. I also highly recommend visiting the Brazilian side of the falls for at least a day or two. Email me if you plan on going anytime soon, and I'll provide some "insider secrets".

A Fall Color Primer

Don's Tip of the Month:

Quick Tips for Great Fall Color Images

Prime fall color season is upon us and any photographer who appreciates the real world of screaming, brilliant, gorgeous color photography should be making tracks for the nearest patch of colorful trees in your area. Use the following tips to improve your Autumn foliage images.
  • First and foremost, if your subject is colorful leaves, screw on and leave on, your polarizing filter. This filter removes the white light reflection off each and every leaf and allows the brilliant color to show through.
  • While backlit fall color leaves can and often do photograph brilliantly, I also love an overcast day for more intimate scenes below the horizon. Don't show any sky in such shots.
  • If you do have a sunny day, work on showing the sun partly hidden behind a piece of the colorful tree. Remember my starburst tips from a previous newsletter, and aim to maximize your starburst.
  • Simplify your scene by picking out just a section of the colorful tree or even just a few leaves against a clean background.
  • Lower your ISO to 100 on calm days. Raise your ISO to about 400 or higher for a faster shutter speed if the leaves are blowing in the wind.
  • Use your tripod!
Image here was taken last week in northern Idaho on a rainy day. Taken with Canon 5D Mark IV and Tamron 28-300mm lens.
Capri, Italy

Anya's Pick of the Month:

Isle of Capri, Italy

This image of mine, chosen by Anya for the month of September, 2016 shows the view from the top of Capri, Italy. About this photo Anya says - "Don and I spent 4 days on Capri Island out in the sea near Naples, Italy. The island has an open cable car which makes getting to the highest point easy enough. We got there as soon as they opened one morning and we couldn't believe the views. Flowers and the deep blue sea in all directions made the photography great. Of course when you are seeing a view like this and you have an Italian gelato in your hand - life is perfect! "
