Hoosier Hemp News

Indiana Hemp Industries Association (INHIA) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade group and state chapter affiliate of the Hemp Industries Association. Our mission is to promote the research and development of industrial hemp products and foster industry development within the state of Indiana.

Hemp History Week

Members Marty Mahan, Scott McKay and Caleb Burgess attended "Hemp in the Holler" in Livingston, Kentucky. A dinner/reception was held on Friday night with a hemp infused menu and guest speakers Mike Lewis, Mike Bowman and Annie Rouse as well as entertainment by Ben Sollee.

Saturday's events included workshops on planting, breaking, paper making, building, distilling and lighting. Along with the workshops, attendees were invited to tour an existing field at Patriotic Hemp founder Dwayne Lewis Jr's property. Attendees ranged from students to prospective growers and manufacturers to entrepreneurs and the INHIA booth was constantly filled with inquisitive individuals and those seeking specific products! In addition to the booth by INHIA there were vendors educating on everything a wide variety of subjects; fertilizer, food, clothing products and manufacturers.

Kentucky being "ground zero" for the hemp movement, the event was attended my some of the biggest names past, present and future and will surely be a "can't miss" event in subsequent years.
Hemp History Week in Kokomo & Cicero this year was a huge success. In addition to 3 beauty salons participating, we also had 2 restaurants, 2 specialty shops, and an art studio stepping forward to help bring hemp awareness to the forefront in the Northern district of Indiana. With the Kokomo Strawberry Festival, First Fridays, and the Mid-Week Farmers Market all scheduled during HHW, this afforded us even greater exposure and we were able to reach out and educate many Hoosiers about the benefits of industrial hemp.  Special thanks goes out to INHIA team members and the countless hours spent hempin' for our future.
Tippy Hemp owner, Derek MacIntire, and his fiancée, Samantha Schutz, had the rare opportunity to teach a short "enrichment" class at New Community School throughout the month of May 2016. The students were an attentive group of 11 sixth- through eighth-graders. For an hour every Wednesday in May, they learned about all sorts of hemp topics from history to hempcrete. Each student received a copy of Hemp Bound by Doug Fine, informational handouts from Hemp History Week, a pair of hemp socks, and a bucket of the hempcrete they made on the last day of class. They enjoyed hemp snacks and smoothies while watching the Bringing it Home movie. It was an excellent experience, and Tippy Hemp Co. plans to stay involved with these enrichments in years to come.
