Immediate Action Required: Support HB 1228

Repeals a provision concerning violation of federal law.

Thanks to Indiana State Representative, District 74, Lloyd Arnold (R), and INHIA Board Member, Justin Swanson of Bose, McKinney & Evans, HB 1228 has been filed with the Indiana General Assembly.

This proposed bill, HB 1228, will eliminate language within our current bill (SB 357, passed in March 2014) that defers to the Federal Government.  Specifically, "Repeals a provision concerning violation of federal law. Amends certain industrial hemp laws to allow: (1) licensed growers to produce industrial hemp; and (2) licensed handlers to process industrial hemp and seed; without the seed commissioner obtaining federal waivers. Prohibits the seed commissioner from issuing a license to a grower or handler until after the seed commissioner has adopted certain rules."

What this means for Indiana

By removing the Federal language, we eliminate red-tape and unnecessary oversight that currently limits Indiana's ability to be at the forefront of the return of this industry.  Industrial hemp is a sustainable, viable and non-psychoactive crop option for Indiana farmers that will drive the creation of many jobs in various sectors.  Industrial hemp is a positive factor not only for Indiana's economy, but also for our environment.   Industrial hemp is food, fuel and fiber.

It is our job to ensure that this bill receives a hearing, and we only have a short window in which to achieve this goal.  The next committee meeting is January 21, 2015 - prior to that time, it is important that we alert all members of the committee that we, as interested Hoosier residents, support this bill and request that it be heard during this session.

The bill currently resides with the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.

EACH OF US SHOULD PHONE NOT ONLY CHAIRMAN LEHE, BUT ALL MEMBERS OF THE AG COMMITTEE! The list of members can be found at House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.

What you can do

Simply call the Capitol Switchboard at 800-382-9841, ask to be transferred to EACH MEMBER of this committee: Reps Lehe, Morrison, Baird, Beumer, Friend, Gutwin, Hamm, Judy, Wright, Klinker, Moed, Niezgazki.

Yes, that means 12 separate calls! Each will only take a minute of your time!

"I am calling to request that Representative ______ schedules a hearing in the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee for bill 1228 regarding industrial hemp. Thank you."
