Firefly's Board, Advisory Committee, Interns and Teachers! There are few greater thrills in life than seeing the seed of an idea through to fruition. We first came up with the idea for Firefly Yoga International in 2013 and spent the next year plotting, making connections, and working with an incredible group of people whose paths crossed ours along the way—including everyone from pro-bono lawyers to public health professionals to interns (some of whom are included in this photo from our first Board Meeting, held in November). There’s so much to celebrate as 2014 comes to a close … and so much to look forward to as 2015 draws near!

We’re so excited to fill you in on our (very successful!) first three pilot programs, to tell you about our Winter Solstice From Dark to Light fundraising campaign (what better gift is there than the gift of hope and healing?), and to offer some self-care tips to keep you grounded and refreshed during the busy holiday season.

Thank you so much for your support of Firefly and the work we’re doing. We wish you and yours a warm and happy holiday season, filled with love.

Annie & Emily, Firefly Yoga International Co-Executive Directors

Fall 2014 Pilot Program Round-Up

After all of the planning, building and collaborating it’s taken to get to this point, it is such a joy to provide our very first programming update. This September, we launched one pilot program in Boston, Massachusetts and two in El Dorado County, California. We were absolutely thrilled to work with partner sites that do such vital work, including REACH Beyond Domestic Violence (MA) and the Center for Violence-Free Relationships (CA)—both of which work with survivors of domestic violence—and Tahoe Turning Point (CA), a group home that serves teen girls placed by juvenile and social service programs. Through these pilots we were able to work with a total of twenty-one trauma survivors, ranging from ages sixteen to seventy-four. The vast majority had never tried yoga prior to participating in the Firefly program.

Winter Solstice Fundraising Campaign: Help Trauma Survivors Transition from Dark to Light

This week, we prepare for the darkest day of the yearthe Winter Solstice. As we celebrate the approach of longer, lighter days, we are asking for your help! Between now and the Solstice on Sunday, December 21, we are asking our supporters to consider making a contribution to help Firefly continue providing free programming to trauma survivors around the nation. Your donation will directly benefit survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence; incarcerated adults and adolescents; teens who have suffered trauma; veterans; firefighters; law enforcement; those living with HIV; and others. Your gift will ring in the brighter days to come, literally helping Firefly (and those with whom we work) transition from darkness to light. [MORE]

2015, Here We Come!

This year has been a banner year for Firefly, but it’s just the beginning! In 2015, Firefly will expand its reach even further. Over the next twelve months we will:
  • Expand our program partners beyond California and Massachusetts to also include Minnesota and Nevada.

  • Significantly increase our reach, with a projection of a total of twenty-six Firefly Programs across California, Nevada, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.

  • In addition to the domestic violence and teen trauma survivors we are already serving, we aim to expand our trauma-informed yoga programs to law enforcement, firefighters, and veterans.

  • Hold our first two Firefly Trainings (in the Boston Metro Area and South Lake Tahoe, respectively) to train Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs) in trauma-informed yoga; in turn, some of these teachers will implement additional Firefly Programs throughout the country.

Take a Minute

One of the things we love most about yoga is its rejuvenating power. Aside from just the practice of asana, yoga teaches us to take care of ourselves. And, at this time of the year, who doesn’t need a little bit of that? Take a break with Firefly Yoga International teacher Laurie Wesp, as she shares her favorite self-care practice in this video.
