Client Voices of the Firefly Program in Trauma-Informed Yoga

Since 2014, Firefly's trauma-informed yoga programs have reached over 300 survivors of trauma. S.L. Rogers is a participant in the Firefly Program in trauma-informed yoga at PAVSA (Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault) in Duluth, MN. Below, Rogers shares on her experience using trauma-informed yoga to support the healing of her mind, body, and spirit.

"I had done yoga previously for a number of years, Kundalini many years ago and Hatha which I had been participating until about a year prior to finding out about the Firefly Program [at PAVSA].

Having gone through a number of major traumas in my life, I found yoga to help center myself, to get some grounding within the tumult that was and still is my life. Having lost my ability to remain employed in a manner where I could afford to continue any practice at all, I was forced to do without yoga as well as anything else not an immediate need, stripping away so I could afford to simply live. Due to limited space, mobility and other circumstances it was difficult to do much practicing at home.

I found out about Firefly when working with one of the people employed at PAVSA. She was quite excited that it was going to be something that would be offered free of charge for those who have been through trauma. There was information on the trauma-informed methods which I read up on. In the end, it looked like a good fit for me. I was very excited to try it...[continue reading]."

Our Vibrant Community of Trauma-Informed Yoga Teachers

Since 2015, Firefly has trained 47 yoga teachers in trauma-informed principles and practice. Below, some of these teachers share on the important work they're doing in their communities to support individual and collective healing from trauma.

Alison Schmitt

Alison Schmitt is a yoga teacher in Boston, MA. Alison participated in the Firefly Training in Boston in January 2016 and has been offering weekly, trauma-informed yoga classes at a group home for women with a history of drug use. Hear from Alison below:

“Every week, I teach a yoga class for women living in a group home. The women are all pregnant or have recently given birth, are detoxing from drug use, and most have been recently sectioned or incarcerated due to their drug use. We currently offer yoga for one hour per week in the common room. The yoga is a mixture of prenatal, post-partum, and baby yoga. Although the class is not specifically described as trauma-informed, the Firefly Training deeply informs my teaching. Considering the many experiences that may have brought trauma into these women’s lives (pregnancy, birth, prison, drug use, and more), I design each class to be trauma-informed..."

Reneé Parcheta

Reneé Parcheta, Ed.S. is the Student Services Director & Principal at BlueSky Online School. Reneé participated in the Firefly Training in trauma-informed yoga in Duluth, MN in July 2016. BlueSky Online School serves many students who have experienced traumatic events, and recently made the decision to transition to a trauma-informed curriculum. Below, Reneé shares with us about her work.

"BlueSky Online School is a public 7-12 school started in 1999 by a parent of a daughter who did not fit into any typical school situation. As a mom, she didn't feel equipped to homeschool her child, and felt the future was online for those students that just don't fit in. She contacted many high-powered tech people (she was equipped with her GED) and eventually fulfilled her vision and started BlueSky Online School in Minnesota.

As we have grown, we have found that over 80% of our students would be considered "at-risk"..."

Rachel Ruth, LA Yoga Girls

Meet Rachel Ruth, who teaches trauma-informed yoga in the Los Angeles area. Rachel participated in the Firefly Training in San Francisco in May 2016.

"The education that I received through Firefly Yoga International, has shifted my own practice and deepened my relationship with teaching. The process of applying trauma-informed principles into my clients’ private sessions has been humbling, real, and requires full transparency. As a teacher, it has given me a comprehensive education in how to engage others in a way that has not only supported clients’ healing, but also allowed for my bridge-building to the much larger world of Integrative Therapies and Holistic Health and Wellness. I look forward to continuing to build bridges of friendship and collaboration so that we may all continue to do good in the world."

  • We want to extend a big THANK-YOU to the El Dorado Community Foundation for its generous grant in support of trauma-informed yoga for adolescents in South Lake Tahoe, CA.
  • Firefly is excited to announce a new collaboration with lululemon-Chestnut Hill and lululemon-Prudential Center in the Boston Metro Area. Through their "Here to Be" program, these stores have recently donated to support a new Firefly Program in the Boston Metro Area (details soon!) and the launch of a scholarship fund for teachers who wish to attend the Firefly Training. Big thanks to lululemon!
  • A limited number of full and partial scholarships are now available for yoga teachers who wish to participate in the Firefly Training.
