Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is just days away!

About the day:
Bridging the Hunger Gap, an event happening on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Camp Lyndon will address the issue of hunger for 200 students in the Barnstable and Mashpee school districts who participate in the federally-funded Free and Reduced Lunch Program. This program provides students in need with two meals a day while school is in session, but not during school vacations. With a grant awarded to Barnstable County Resource Development Office by the Massachusetts Service Alliance, we are partnering with the YMCA Cape Cod to provide the food that will be delivered to the 200 children for their February vacation. To read more about it, visit our website

Another project happening is at the Cape Abilities 6A Farm in Dennis. They need assistance with preparing the greenhouse for the 2015 growing season! Volunteers, 18 years or older, will fill buckets with growing medium and assemble the hydroponic system used to grow tomatoes. A light breakfast and gardening gloves will be provided by AmeriCorps Cape Cod, while all other tools and lunch will be provided by Cape Abilities.

Email Brittany Quaglieri (brittany.quaglieri@barnstablecounty.org) if you would like to join us in service on MLK Day!

On Saturday, January 10, AmeriCorps Cape Cod members assisted the American Red Cross with their annual Scout Emergency Preparedness Fair. Scouts from across the Cape earned a badge after learning about topics like first aid, bike and seat belt safety, and fire extinguishers. To the right, members J.B. and Carly instruct scouts about first aid for burns.
