Welcome to the CQ October 2017 Newsletter

What a fascinating month in our nation's political history. MMP has served up a new style of coalition, and it's an exciting prospect. We have achieved many firsts and broken new ground with a whole new style of collaboration, and I’m hopeful that Aotearoa will lead the world in political thinking to solve some major issues that don’t just affect us.

As I’ve got older my interest in politics has increased especially as I realise that often I and others have little idea of how policies are going to play out in the long term. During the Lange Government, I joined the farmers march on Parliament demonstrating against our farm subsidies that had been taken away from us, and yes we were very cross. The march achieved a bit of blood letting but bugger all else.

The irony was it was the best thing for the farming industry and within a few years we were back on our feet and considered world leaders due to not being subsidised. The Lange Government was, in my lifetime, the most beneficial for farming in my 30 years in the industry, but at the time we didn’t appreciate the tough love.

Maybe this Coalition will be a huge boost for farming as well - we will be wiser when we look back in a few years time.

Regardless good luck to the new administration in the Beehive.

I think this article by Rod Oram is the best I have read summarising the team that will lead us forward.

CQ’s  Birthday Party to celebrate 10 years is happening

Based on your feedback of wanting to connect more broadly within CQ and the fact that 2018 is CQ’s 10th year anniversary – we figured those were two pretty good reasons to say yes.

We’re calling it The Big CQ Meeting - because that’s what we do best and we don’t have a fancy advertising agency.

The goals of The Big CQ Meeting are simple:

  • Build meaningful connections across our wider CQ community

  • Explore together how we activate our Collective Intelligence to the next level for effective action and positive impact

  • Fund more CQ scholarships with the proceeds

Here is a peek at the agenda!

Due to CQ Members input - we have clarified CQ’s WHY!

Mary Beth and Harv have been on a mission to define CQ’s Why. They perfected the art of going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole, while being very clever and cool. The output was decidedly average.

However, Harv will be eternally grateful to Rich Alderton who highlighted he had joined CQ because of the why, and was able to express it there and then. You beauty Rich, as it has been a game changer in many ways already, and definitely in the future.

Check it out!

Social Enterprise World Forum - it went off in Christchurch

We are immensely proud that the world forum was designed and implemented with a bunch of CQ members at the heart of the event.

Hats off to Anake Goodall, Alex Hannant, Chris O'Neill and Oliviah Theyers-Collins and of course all the others who made this happen in New Zealand.

Here are some thoughts post the forum.

In memory of Nic Magdalinos

This month we lost a young man from our CQ whanau, who died in his home in Napier. Very sad and unexpected. His mate Mark Hamilton has written a lovely piece about Nic - please take the time to read this.

The New Zealand Project

For the second time we are featuring this book because of its national significance.

This book represents, from the perspective of a brilliant young New Zealander, a vision for confronting the challenges ahead. Unashamedly idealistic, The New Zealand Project arrives at a time of global upheaval that demands new conversations about our shared future. Click here to order.
