Welcome to the CQ May 2018 Newsletter
Last month I had the pleasure of writing about a stunning woman, Eva Gluyas, in my Blog, and the impact she had on me and many others. At the time of writing the Blog, Eva was battling terminal cancer.

I headed down to Dunedin to spend the day with her on May 6th, to find her in good spirits but hugely frustrated at not being able to speak clearly due to the brain tumor. What a great combination; me deaf and her slurring her words!  We had a fab day together though, and when I said goodbye there were no tears as I thought I would be seeing her at the end of June.
Eva died just over a week later on the 14th May, and as I write this there are tears in my eyes, as I’m still in mourning, as are many others. There is a full obituary below with others contributing.

Thanks to Hayley Anderson, I was invited to talk with her cohort of Global Woman in Hamilton, which was a blast due to them being such a cool crowd.  As I was talking about the attributes of CQ Members’ I made the comment that of the 4 attributes, I was less knowledgeable of curiosity.  It struck me that this was an oxymoron: i.e. why was I not curious about learning more about curiosity?

Then, a few days later, I heard Frances Valentine talk at ‘Unfiltered’ about the need for NZers to raise their curiosity levels. That did it!

So I’m now into it, and learning a huge amount about curiosity - and it’s a complex wee thing. It’s something Eva was incredibly adept at, now I think about it.  So stand by people, you are about to be bombarded with new learnings on curiosity - coming soon.

One last thing. I do get bemused at New Zealanders incredible naivety when it comes to simplifying international politics. The tensions in Israel are real and devastating (again), but to try and look at the conflict through our eyes is almost pointless, and certainly naive.  Where we struggle to bed in a simple Treaty made just 168 years ago, these poor buggers are dealing with thousands of years of turmoil, and also political interference from around the world.

It makes me frustrated that we keep getting caught up in the small stuff, rather than using our privileged status in Aotearoa to just get on with life, and smash down these comparatively small barriers. Is the Provincial Growth Fund something you can utilise to make a difference in breaking down those barriers?

Harv's Thinkeree for the Month

Global Women breakthrough leaders

Hayley Anderson has written a few words about Harv's talk to Global Women in Hamilton this month.

Obituary - Eva Gluyas

On February 22nd & 23rd Eva hosted her team Half Sugar at the phd3 headquarters in Auckland. The team heard from customers who had experienced Eva’s design thinking skills with astounding results commercially and happier customers. A stunning feedback session followed.

Eva was having trouble with the functioning of her right arm and hand at the time, and doctors were trying to work out what the issue was.

Well a week later they found out, and the rest is history.
Eva you were much loved, and Half Sugar will never be quite the same - go well.

Don't underestimate the roll of Independent Directors even in small business

Paul Hocking, an experienced Director, sent this information through.  It is a great reminder just how important Governance can be even for small business. Thanks Paul.

A very curious fellow
