Saskatchewan Cultural Organization Highlight

Parkland Valley Sport, Culture & Recreation District would like to take this opportunity to highlight one non-profit organization per month in our Read All About It! To create additional awareness of non-profit organizations in Saskatchewan that are here to help the communities in the Parkland Valley District!

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) was established in 1969, and since that time fifteen Branches have been formed throughout the province of Saskatchewan.Each Branch is run by local members who volunteer as executive and committee members, and function within the Society’s Constitution and By-Laws.  If you are researching in the area where a branch is located, you are encouraged to become a member and participate in the branch activities. SGS Branches meet once a month and provide excellent programs, including workshops, guest speakers, and member sharing. The branches foster fellowship and provide a positive environment to help you with your research. Many publish newsletters throughout the year, offering timely and valuable information to assist members.  Also many of the branches have a library, obituary and cemetery collection, and other special collections specific to their area.

Mission Statement
SGS is a volunteer provincial heritage organization whose purpose is to promote and develop the study, research, and preservation of genealogy and family history.

· Preservation of Saskatchewan records;
· Assistance to Saskatchewan residents researching their heritage anywhere;
· Assistance to anyone researching their Saskatchewan heritage;
· To be a collective voice of genealogy in the province of Saskatchewan;
· To coordinate all genealogical and family history projects and research in Saskatchewan.

SPRA Take the Lead!

Take the Lead!® is a program focused on fostering leadership skills in youth aged 11-14. Youth know how to play best! Utilizing Take the Lead!® resources and training, youth can practice leading active play opportunities, providing more physical activity opportunities for their peers. Because of Take the Lead!® training, SPRA is confident that these same youth will later draw upon these skills as they reinvest in our communities.

Take the Lead!® Outcomes:

  • Youth leaders (ages 11 – 14) demonstrate leadership qualities and self-confidence
  • Children are physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes per day in the school environment, to help achieve the goal of 60-90 minutes of physical activity per day
  • There are safe active play areas for children
  • Increased time dedicated to active, fun play during school recess, noon hour and the after school time period
  • Strengthened capacity of schools and communities to support physical activity for children

HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Devleopment & SPRA Play Leadership

Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District will be offering HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD) and SPRA Play Leadership for Summer Programmers, Swimming Pool Staff or any other front line staff in late May or early June 2017! Watch for these training opportunities in upcoming editions of the monthly Read All About It!

PHCD is a one-day training that will help front-line leaders (anyone working with children aged 6 to 12 - i.e. camp counselor, coach, swim instructor) improve the quality of programs. It provides in depth training in the HIGH FIVE®   principles of healthy child development so front-line leaders understand what they need to do to ensure each child's social, emotional and cognitive needs are met. Leaders learn activities and gain knowledge, tips and resources to enhance their programs as well as their relationships with children and other staff members.
SPRA Play Leadership Note: HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD) Workshop is a pre-requisite for this workshop! This one day workshop will go over the basics of program planning. You will brainstorm with other program leaders games and crafts for your program.  You will leave with a variety of resources such as attendance sheets, waiver forms, program plan template, etc.
For more information or to request a training, please contact, Chelsey Johnson, by phone: (306) 786-6586 or by email:
