Longtime Parkland Valley Board Member Retires

“I’m going to miss his cheery smile, positive attitude, and especially his humour.”

Just one of the many memories and send offs for long time Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation board member John Chesney who recently retired from his position after serving the area for nearly 30 years.

Of those years, Chesney spent 15 with the Qu’Appelle Valley Regional Rec Board before it’s amalgamation to the Parkland Valley District on September 1, 2007, where he spent the remainder of his time.

Chesney was originally voted to the board back in 1989 and some might say it was meant to be.

“Qu’Appelle Valley was looking for office space. I was a municipal administrator at the time, and we had just bought a school division building. We had all kinds of space. They moved in and I said hey, I’ll sit on the board since I knew what was going on in the Rural Municipality (of Cana).”

Not just a Board Member, Chesney served as Chairperson for a number of years and played a vital role in transitioning leadership and operations of the organization to policy governance. His understanding of governance from being Rural Municipality Administrator helped keep everyone focused on the role of the board in policy governance and the role of management.

“Collaborating with John has been both a pleasure and honour,” said fellow Board Member Clarissa Mydonick. “During our Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation board meetings, I looked forward to the round table discussions because John always enlightened us with a little joke or two! Thank you, John, for being a great role model and mentor.”

Chesney enjoyed both being Chairperson and a  member of the board, saying he didn’t like one more than the other, but joked that being Chairperson was “one of the easiest jobs and you got to harp on people to get things done.” What he enjoyed about being a Board Member was “you got the chance to express your opinion and you got to vote".

“At Board Meetings or Planning Sessions, you could always count on John to be fully engaged in discussions but still find the time to crack or a joke or two. John’s storytelling, travel stories, news updates and joke telling will be missed,” said Chelsey Johnson, Community Consultant for Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation.

Ultimately, Chesney decided to retire from the Parkland Valley District Board so that a new generation of volunteers could step in and learn some of the valuable information that he was able to gain during his tenure.

“The younger people should know there’s not a lot of time that has to be dedicated to the board. You have a couple hours worth of a meeting once a month. That’s not the end of the world. I belong to our little old curling rink in the RM, we’ve run it since 1957. To say I got lots from being on the Parkland Valley’s board is an understatement. I got a ton of information for them that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise from being on the board.”

Thank you John for your dedication to Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District!
