Welcome to 2015

and a new program of VWL events and projects

Say hello to 2015's first VWList, a monthly post of events and member news for Victorian women lawyers.
The year has kick-started with VWL ramping up its support of the Indigo Foundation and women studying law in Afghanistan. This will see VWL covering the tuition costs of four female law students per year. Other initiatives this year include:
     > an all-woman mooting competition

     > a special focus on family violence
     > research into body image and the law
     > CPD accreditation of VWL events.

VWL’s full program for 2015 will be released shortly. Keep an eye on VWL's website for details.

On 12 February VWL’s patron, Chief Justice Marilyn Warren spoke about women jurists as role models at a breakfast event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce. A transcript of her Honour's remarks is available here.

One of the most important events in the VWL calendar is the Dame Roma Mitchell Memorial Lunch, co-hosted with the Law Institute of Victoria. This year’s lunch will be held on Wednesday 11 March and the keynote speaker will be author and historian Clare Wright, winner of the 2014 Stella Prize – a major literary award celebrating Australian women’s writing. Further details to follow soon.

Other events on the horizon include an International Women's Day celebration hosted by the Russell Kennedy Women's Network and the launch of our Flexible Work Toolkit.
Towards the end of 2014 members would have received a copy of Portia, VWL's annual journal. Portia 2014 features articles by some reknowned contributors and women's artworks supplied by the Women's Art Register as well as local practising artists.

If you did not receive your copy of Portia, please email or click here to read it online.

VWL is offering a 50% discount on new and renewed memberships for the remainder of the 2015 financial year. Under the special offer, membership will run until 30 June 2015. To take advantage of the special offer, complete and return this form.
