MARCH 2016 NEWSLETTER

Greetings <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,

Welcome to the National Center for Institutional Diversity's quarterly newsletter! The NCID at the University of Michigan focuses on advancing diversity research and practice by convening national scholars and leaders from across the country to lay the foundation for continued commitments across institutions.

NEW LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Earlier this month we initiated the 2016-2017 NLA Fellows with our partners at the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. Fellows in the NLA gain the knowledge, tools, and courage to be effective when leading in complex and highly contested environments. Click here to learn more about the Fellows.

THE ROLE OF RESEARCH IN ADVANCING DIVERSITY, EQUITY,
AND INCLUSION IN HIGHER EDUCATION
In partnership with the Center for Policy Research and Strategy (CPRS) at the American Council on Education (ACE), in January we invited scholars, researchers, policy experts and key decision makers to, via research, enhance diversity on college campuses through better alignment of policy, practice, and discourse. Proceedings from this convening will be published next month.

This week, the EducationCounsel published "Bridging the Research to Practice Gap", which examines the state of diversity research and provides strategies for institutions to leverage research for organizational change.
CONVENING PROCEEDINGS

Proceedings from the "Multisectoral Collaboration to Address the Social Determinants of Health" national convening are now available! Leaders in academia, clinical care, and public health met to identify challenges and understand how to leverage community support and partnerships in order to comprehensively address inequality in health outcomes.
DIVERSITY SCHOLARS NETWORK
Our Diversity Scholars Network is a group of over 400 individuals from a wide range of disciplines who have been recognized as exceptional contributors to the understanding of the role of diversity research. The network is continuously growing and allows scholars and community members alike to find others who share interest in the promotion of leadership for greater diversity, opportunity, and inclusion across higher education and society.

FEATURED RESEARCH
Dr. Mellie Torres, a 2012 Exemplary Diversity Scholar, recently released a study of how a cohort of Latino males' behavior, involvement, and beliefs shaped their educational careers, helping us to understand what shapes the pathways to higher education. Read "An exploratory study of the academic engagement and beliefs of Latino male high school students" here
FEATURED SCHOLAR
Dr. Alana Lebrón studies the social determinants of health inequities experienced by Latina/os as part of her NCID Postdoctoral Fellowship and is an active member in our growing network of diversity scholars. Watch this short video to learn more about her research and find out about our fellowship here
NCID uses LinkedIn to disseminate research, opportunities, and resources in our network. Follow our page to stay connected to our network of scholars and practitioners.
